The New River Gorge National River is situated in south-central West Virginia, near the small communities of Glen Jean and New Haven. The nearest larger town is Beckley, located around 10 miles to the southwest, while the nearest larger city is the state's capital of Charleston, found around 70 miles to the northwest.

The river traverses a gorge through the local Appalachian Mountains. You will find many things to do throughout these wooded hills. From camping spots, hiking trails, and scenic views in summer to winter sports when the snow flies, there is always something to do in the area if you know where to look.

There are several good hiking trails available along the New River Gorge National River. Long Point Trail offers fine views of the famous Gorge Bridge. The Kaymoor Miners Trail takes hikers to where they can explore an old mining town. The Glade Creek Trail meanders along the creek through the nearby woodlands. All of these offer great views of the local countryside and are considered especially picturesque when fall, leaf colors are at their peak.

There are several national park campgrounds located along the New River Gorge National River. These are very rustic in nature, usually offering no hookups or water access, and only vault toilets. These sites are free of charge but are only available on a first-come-first-serve basis. Most of these locations can accommodate RV's, but some can only fit those that are small to medium in size. Local ranger stations will have current information on the sizes of the sites at each campground. Exploring the Area

These locations highlight the history of this industry. There is also a Mountain Homestead, that highlights what life would have been like for the pioneers who helped settle the area and became its first miners.

The New River Gorge Bridge is a picturesque structure that crosses the river and gorge on US 19, near Fayetteville. This is known as one of the world's longest, single-span, arch bridges, as well as one of the highest that allows vehicles. There is a Visitor's Center located here that discusses the construction of the structure. There is also a walking path that takes you to a prime view of it. A catwalk skirts the bottom of the bridge, under the highway. Guided tours are available at certain times during the year.
