RV Guide

Introduction

Clear lake waters reflect the wide-open blue skies and the surrounding mountains at Alamo Lake State Park. Visitors can enjoy the diverse landscape of brush, wildflowers, and cacti that characterizes Arizona.
The park’s history is just as diverse as the land itself. In 1944 the Army Corps of Engineers began work on the Alamo Dam to protect areas around the Lower Colorado River from flooding. While constructing the dam, the Corps of Engineers also built recreational facilities including a beach, boat ramp, picnic areas, and a campground. In 1969, the Arizona State Parks Board signed a lease with the Corps of Engineers to operate the area as a state park.
Today, guests at Alamo Lake State Park can enjoy the original facilities built by the Corps of Engineers as well as updated activities established by the parks board.
The park is centrally located between popular state parks like Catalina State Park and Lost Dutchman State Park and national parks like the Grand Canyon.
Alamo Lake is ranked as one of the best largemouth bass fishing locations in the state of Arizona. It’s also home to a variety of wildlife including bats, lizards, snakes, mountain lions, and both bald and golden eagles.
With the nearest city lights over 40 miles away, the park also offers breathtaking views of the night sky. Stargazers frequent the area for meteor showers and other astrological events.
Alamo Lake State Park offers six campgrounds with a variety of hookup options for RV camping.

Transportation

Driving

Alamo Lake State Park is located just outside of Wenden, Arizona. It is easy to access by car or RV from the state capital of Phoenix, clocking in at about a two and a half hour drive.
Because of its rural location, turn-offs for the park entrance are easy to miss. When driving down US Highway 60, look for the brown point-of-interest sign. This sign marks the exit for a two-lane road that will take you across a set of train tracks and 33 miles to the north. The park entrance is located at milepost 33.
Drivers should be aware that the road leading to the park, while paved, is open range. Cattle, herds of deer, and the occasional wild burro are commonly seen crossing the road. Exercise caution and obey posted speed limits.
All roads within the park and the campground are paved and accessible for RVs and trailers. Backup and pull-through sites are available at each campground.
Parking is available at each site in the campground. Additional parking can be found in the day use areas and near the boat ramps. Park only in designated areas.
Off-highway vehicles are not allowed in the park on our park roads, but there are OHV trails adjacent to the park.
