Introduction

Almond Lake, also known as Almond Reservoir, is an artifical lake near Almond, New York. The reservoir was created by the Almond dam on Canacadea Creek that resulted from a flood control project. The area that surrounds the dam is forest-like and offers beautiful scenery.
You can access Almond Lake from Kanacadea County Park, which provides you with boat launching and shore access. Fishing is popular in Almond Lake, as are paddle boating, canoeing, and kayaking. Day-use camping and overnight RVing is also popular here. Nearby activities include camping, hiking, wildlife viewing, playground, boating, water sports, and picnicking.
Kanakadea Park and Almond Lake are great places to take the family and the kids, and can also be an excellent place for friends to get away for a day or even a whole weekend. The park near Almond Lake also provides a variety of campsites. You can choose to get a site for tenting, a site for your RV (with electric hookups), or choose to stay in one of their quaint cabins. Transportation

Driving

Almond Lake is north-east of Almond, NY, and north-west of Hornell, NY. Traveling east from Almond or West from Hornell on Route 21 will lead you to Webbs Crossing Rd, which takes you to Kanakadea Park. This is the park you use for lake access, park use, water activities and camping.

It’s easy to navigate, and using an RV to get there is straightforward. Following the roads to Kanakadea Park will allow you to park and get checked-in and set up at your campground. The roads are mostly paved and easy to navigate.

Parking around the lake is only allowed at the park entrance, your campground, or the boat launch area for boats on a trailer. Note: no power/electric/gas boats are allowed on the lake.

Kanakadea Park

Almond Lake can only be accessed from Kanakadea Park, and this park is the only nearby campground. It gives visitors the option of three types of overnight stays. You can decide to set up a tent and camp overnight. You can also choose to stay in one of their furnished cabins. Or, you could decide to bring your RV and set up camp at one of their sites. Don’t have an RV? Find an RV rental just a few miles away from the park.
The RV campsites provide a picnic area and enough room for large RVs to camp. There are electric hookups for RVs, but no water or sewage hookups. There is a dump station close to the campground if you need to remove your RV’s waste. Whether you own a travel trailer or an RV, Kanakadea makes it easy for campers, trailers, or RVs of any size to fit in their campgrounds.

Everything you can do at Almond Lake is what Kanakadea Park provides. From boating to trails to playgrounds to picnicking to wildlife viewing, it is all done at Kanakadea Park. You have lake access to use the shores for fun or to fish and can also use their boat launch area to launch your non-powered boat or kayak onto the lake. Paddle around and enjoy the scenery or fish for a variety of species of fish.
Kanakadea Park is beautiful and is located on the north side of Almond Lake. South of Almond Lake is the Canacadea State Forest with lots of wildlife that you may even possibly see on your campground or around the lake. Overall, it’s a family-friendly place that is also RV-friendly.

In-Season

Fishing

Fishing is popular on Almond Lake, and you can find a wide variety of fish and aquatic life. Some of the species of fish in the lake include yellow perch, common carp, largemouth bass, black crappie, spottail shiner, golden shiner, white sucker, and brown bullhead, among others. You can decide to fish from the shore or take out a non-powered boat or kayak into the middle of the lake for deeper fishing.

Camping

Camping at Almond Lake is beautiful, and the only campsites available at Almond Lake are at Kanakadea Park, which is also the only way to get access to the lake. The park features campgrounds of your choice, with either tenting, electric RV sites, or furnished cabins. There are no water or sewage hookups at the park, but a dumpsite for waste is available nearby. Besides having no water hookups, the campsites are very RV-friendly.

Picnicking

Almond Lake provides several picnic tables around the lake, and most campsites also have a picnic area. You can enjoy a day near the lake while you spend time picnicking with family and friends. You can find small areas to picnic near the lake, but the best picnic sites you will find are at Kanakadea Park. If you decide to camp here, your site will include a picnic table, but you will also be able to find other picnic sites around the park.

Off-Season

Hiking

Although there aren’t any steep inclines or huge mountains around the area, there are still lovely areas to hike and walk on trails around the lake and near the lake. The lake has lots of forested areas that make for a quiet and tranquil walk as you enjoy nature. Just south of Almond Lake is the Canacadea State Forest, which is home to a variety of wildlife.

Boating

While the park doesn’t offer any boat rentals, they give visitors lake access, which includes a boat launch area to get onto the water. You can have small or large-sized boats, but motors are prohibited at the lake. A small rowboat is okay to use, as are kayaks, canoes, and similar-styled boats.
You can drive your vehicle down to the boat launch area to unload your boat or carry your kayak from your campsite if you are staying at Kanakadea Park.

Wildlife Viewing

In the vicinity of Canacadea State Forest, which extends into Almond Lake and Camp Kanakadea, you can find a variety of wildlife. Some wildlife you may find include black bear, warblers, wild turkeys, white-tailed deer, and beaver. Although most of the wildlife remains in the forest to the south of the lake, you can occasionally find any one of these animals around the lake and inside the park.

Playground

There are a variety of areas for children to play, and the park north of Almond Lake features a playground for kids. There are picnic areas and beautiful scenery that surrounds the playground, which makes for fun family times near the lake. The playground is medium-sized and allows for many kids to play in the park at the same time. Most of the time, your kids will have the park to themselves, but it can get quite busy during holiday weekends.
