Introduction
If you’re looking for a great place to get away for a while, Clarkco State Park in Quitman, Mississippi should be on your list of places to go next. This state park may only consist of 815 acres, but it has everything you could possibly need for an excellent RV stay. Enjoy full hookups, nearby restrooms, showers, and laundry facilities, shaded and paved campsites, and a whole world of scenic nature to take in.
Since 1938, when the Civilian Conservation Corps helped erect this park to help preserve wildlife and give men more jobs, people have come here to get away from the crowded world. Here, you’ll get to sit back and enjoy the rolling hills, shaded trees, and glistening Clarkco Lake. Check out the nature trails and listen for a few moments to the birds chirping. Or, grab your fishing pole out of the camper and go sit out by the lake. Many people enjoy a few rounds of golf or watching their kids play at the splash pad. Whatever your idea of fun, it’s all here at Clarkco State Park. You can come at any time of the year, as they stay open year-round, but the best time is from mid-May to mid-August.

Clarkco State Park is located in Quitman, Mississippi. It is easy to get to, whether you’re coming from New Orleans, Jackson, Tuscaloosa, or Philadelphia. Once inside the park, you should have no problems at all getting around, regardless of how big your rig is. The roads and even the individual campsites are paved, giving you a smooth riding - and parking - experience. Just remember that the maximum speed limit in the park, if there are no other signs posted, is 25 miles per hour.
You might find that, especially during the peak season, exploring the park on your bike is a much more pleasant experience. You can enjoy the fresh air and worry less about having to find a parking spot. Just keep in mind that bicycle use after dark is not allowed unless you have the proper headlights and reflectors.

What’s better than quiet, shady pull-through campsites located in a peaceful and charming country setting? Meridian East/Toomsuba KOA offers convenient pull-through sites with full hookups and 30-amp service. Just two miles from the interstate, but free from traffic noise, at Meridian East/Toomsuba KOA, enjoy the evening sounds of owls, mockingbirds, and other avian visitors. You’ll enjoy good, old-fashioned southern hospitality and beauty, and feel right at home. Enjoy a dip in the pool, and let the pups romp in the dog park. There’s even a super slippery 550-foot water slide, group pavilion and horseshoe pits.
Clarkco Campground
The campground here at Clarkco State Park has everything you need and more. There are 43 well-developed, campsites to choose from that offer full hookups for your RV. That includes electric, water, and sewer hookups. Some sites only have up to 30-amp electric hookups, while others go up to 50-amp. Also, you can choose to stay on the waterfront or in the wooded areas, whichever you prefer. There are also 17 primitive sites that are typically meant for tents.
The sites are fully shaded and paved for your convenience, and each one has a picnic table, fire pit, and grill for you to enjoy during your stay. Nearby, you’ll find three bathhouses (two of them have showers), a laundry facility, and a dump station. Feel free to bring your pets along on your vacation as well, just be sure to keep them on a leash. Each site can accommodate up to eight people and two vehicles, and you can make reservations by going online.

Off-Season
Hiking the Nature Trail
The best place to go to see Clarkco State Park in all its beauty is the Nature Trail. The entire trail totals about five miles, but if you’d like to take a shorter walk, there are portions of it that are only about half a mile long. You can even take your bike out on the trails if you don’t wish to walk. Just be sure to watch for other hikers and bikers. Along the way, you’ll find the observation tower where you can look out over the lake and all the wildlife.
Outdoor Recreation
If disc golf really isn’t your game though, there are plenty of other options to choose from. If you remember to pack your baseball bat and ball in your camper or trailer, you can practice your swing out on the field here. There are also two tennis fields, as well as a basketball goal for you to shoot some hoops. If you didn’t bring any sort of sports equipment, you can always opt for the playground, where there are lots of fun slides and swings to play on.
Disc Golfing
If you like to get outside and play disc golf, now is your chance while you’re staying at Clarkco State Park in your camper. Here, you’ll find an area that has a fully setup nine-hole disc golf course that you are welcome to use any time. Take your friends out and challenge them to a friendly game. Disc golfing can be a lot of fun, and your friends will probably think so too.
In-Season
Picnicking
While you are welcome to just use the picnic tables and grills that are located at your campsite, there are also 60 other picnic areas located all around Clarkco Lake. These sites all have grills, tables in the shade, and an excellent lake view for you to enjoy while you eat and hang out. The kids will also enjoy the nearby playgrounds. If you have a large party, there are three picnic pavilions that are available for reservation.
Playing at the Splash Pad
There’s no better way to cool off from the summer sunshine than to splash around in cool, refreshing water. And Clarkco State Park has something to offer than many other parks don’t. During the peak season feel free to bring the kids over to the splash pad, where the entire family can have fun and stay entertained for hours. Just be sure to put on sunblock, as you wouldn’t want to get a nasty sunburn.
Fishing
One great way you can enjoy Clarkco Lake is to find a well shaded spot and go fishing for a while. The lake takes up about 65 acres of the park, and if you wait long enough, you just might be able to catch some bass, catfish, or even bream. Just be sure that you have a valid fishing license, and don’t forget to pack it in your RV when you come to to Clarkco State Park for a visit.
