Introduction
Hither Hills State Park is a scenic campground just steps away from a sandy beachfront and surrounded by nature trails. The 1,755-acre state park is on the southeastern edge of Long Island near Montauk, New York. At this oceanfront RV campground with over 170 sites, you’ll fall asleep to the sound of the waves, witness some fantastic stargazing and have an opportunity to explore diverse woodlands filled with Russian olive, shad, oak, and pine trees. With two miles of sandy beach and a 40-acre freshwater lake perfect for sport fishing, this campsite is a no-brainer for your next family RV holiday. This coastal nature reserve abounds in opportunities for outdoor recreation, such as hiking, biking, hunting, and cross-country skiing.
Set up your RV camp close to the crashing waves and let the kids loose on the beach or at the playground. Challenge your kids to a game of basketball or volleyball, get involved in recreational programs and explore the network of bridle paths, hiking, biking, and cross country ski trails. The unique walking dunes of Napeague Harbor on the eastern edge of the park offer some unique sights. With so much to do in such a charming setting, the campground is popular so you’ll have to book early to grab a spot. Unfortunately, pets are not allowed at this park.

Driving
Hither Hill State Park is located 122 miles from Manhattan via Sunrise Highway, and RVers won't have any problems locating it because it is easy to find. RVers can rest easy knowing that they won't encounter any height obstacles or restrictions along their way. The closest town to the park is East Hampton, and if you need to top up your supplies or get a bite to eat, you can most likely find it there.
Within the park, the roads are paved with no driving restrictions so you’ll have no problems navigating to your campsite. RVers can set up camp when they arrive and once that's done, the hiking and biking trails are convenient ways of getting around.
Parking
A large parking area is available to your right as you enter the park and is situated adjacent to the park's convenience store. Day visitors can park their vehicles here before heading out on foot to the available activities.

Reservations camping
West Loop
The 176 basic grass campsites at Hither Hills State Park are divided between three different loops: the West Loop, the East Loop, and the J Loop. The biggest section, the West Loop, has 108 sites suitable for RV, trailer, and tent camping. Each campsite has a concrete patio area, but you will have to bring your own fire pit. Since there are no electrical hookups, you are welcome to use a generator during certain daytime hours.
Each site can accommodate up to six people per night. The majority of sites are back-in and vary in length from approximately 25 to 40 feet. If you require an ADA-accessible site, there are several that you can reserve. Campers have access to modern restrooms with hot showers and flush toilets, as well as an RV dump station. Picnic tables and fire pits are available at the day-use area.
The West Loop is set on a two-mile sandy beach with access to a 40-acre freshwater lake. Other facilities include a kids’ playground, playing fields, horseshoe pits, and basketball and volleyball courts. There is a park office, camp store with necessities and centrally located phones available.
Hither Hills State Park is open from sunrise to sunset every day of the year. During the peak season (June to September), a minimum stay of seven days is required. Reservations can be made up to nine months in advance. Pets are not allowed in the campground or in the park.
East Loop
The East Loop is directly opposite the West Loop along the beach and campers will have easy beach access during their stay. It consists of 37 campsites that can accommodate RVers, trailer campers, and tent campers. All three loops require that the individual who books the campsite needs to be at least 21 years old or older and should be at the campsite continually. Be prepared to provide an ID, as park staff may want to check it when you check-in. During the busy season, the sites must be reserved from Sunday to Sunday at least. Campsites on the East Loop have all the same amenities as the West Loop, including a communal restroom with hot showers and flushing toilets.
J Loop
The remaining 23 campsites can be found in the J Loop, which is perfect for tent campers looking for a quieter campsite. This loop is only available to tent campers, as the road to the campsite is not suitable for RVs or pop-up trailers. Tent campers will be given key cards to gain entry to the loop and will have to pay a deposit for the card.
Each site can accommodate one car and six people per night and campers can most of the same amenities as the other two loops. Unfortunately, the use of campfires and generators is not allowed in the J Loop, and these rules are strictly enforced.

In-Season
Hiking
Hither Hills State Park has an impressive network of hiking and biking trails that wind their way throughout the park and along the shoreline. Take a stroll along the scenic bridle paths and admire the panoramic coastal views of the North Atlantic. The unique walking dunes of Napeague Harbor on the western side of the park offer some wonderful views, or simply take a stroll through the woodlands dotted with oak, shad, pine, and Russian olive trees.
Water sports
Set right on a two-mile oceanfront beach and a 40-acre freshwater lake, there are plenty of opportunities for exciting water sporting recreation at Hither Hills State Park. Go surfing or windsurfing on the ocean waves of the North Atlantic or swim and stand up paddleboard on the glassy waters of the lake. You can also enjoy paddling along the lake or in the ocean with your kayak or canoe, so make sure to bring yours along in the motorhome.
Recreation Programs
During the summer months, an exciting recreation program keeps the whole family entertained. Enjoy a jam-packed schedule of fun organized activities hosted by the park such as family movie nights, folk and line dancing events, kids’ summer theater or magic shows, and a variety of environmental interpretation programs. You won’t be bored! Most of these are hosted by the rangers at the park, who enjoy imparting their knowledge of the surrounding nature and doing things with the campers. The entertainment program is subject to change so be sure to ask the park for an up-to-date schedule upon booking.
Off-Season
Sport fishing
Hither Hills State Park offers both freshwater and saltwater fishing for RV fishermen visiting its borders. The 40-acre freshwater lake at Hither Hills State Park is a favorite amongst anglers who can enjoy sport fishing here all year round. The fish you’ll typically find in the area include largemouth and smallmouth bass and trout. Alternatively, you can enjoy fishing on the beach. For something completely different, you can even obtain a special permit that allows you to fish at night.
Coastal walks
The two-mile stretch of sandy beachfront is perfect for a crisp winter stroll when the scenery is at its most dramatic. Don your best winter gear (it gets windy!) and comb the beachfront for unusual shells and marine life such as Horseshoe crabs. Pack a picnic with a flask of steaming hot tea or coffee to enjoy along the way or up at the day-use area when you’re done. Coastal walks are a very relaxing way to enjoy being out in nature!
Cross-Country Skiing
Pack your skis and snowshoes along when you visit the park over the colder months. During the winter months, the mountain bike trails that surround this coastal nature reserve are groomed and turned into exceptional ski trails. Lined with trees and coastal views, the scenery is one of the best in the area for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing with trails that are accessible for skiers of all levels and ages. Make sure to wrap up warm and don’t forget to bring your camera!
