Introduction

Your trip to Kaweah Lake in Lemon Cove, California holds lots of promises for excitement, exploration, and the chance to enjoy a refreshing getaway. Located 20 miles east of Visalia and eight miles west of Sequoia National Park, this Army COE park offers RV, tent, and group camping options to visitors.

The perfect place to begin exploring the park is the Visitor Center at the Lemon Hill Recreation Area where you can collect information about the park, its features, landscapes, and interesting spots to visit. As you settle in, you can choose the activity that appeals to you, be it fishing, boating, sailing, or water skiing. The recreation areas in the park offer the chance for campers and visitors to enjoy picnics and take a swim in the lake. Bird watchers in the park are also treated to nice views of migrating birds along the Pacific Flyway corridor. In addition, there are plenty of park programs that provide the opportunity to be immersed in the park’s historical aspects.

The Horse Creek Campground in this lake park offers RV camping options for visitors, with campsites that can accommodate rigs up to 80 feet in length. Some of the facilities/amenities in the park include restrooms, flush toilets, showers, a trailer dump station, and an amphitheater.

Kings Canyon National Park and Sequoia National Park are just a stone's throw away from this COE park, so you could decide to spend some time there too.

Transportation

Driving

Located 20 miles east of Visalia and 8 miles west of Sequoia National Park, Kaweah Lake is easy to locate and drive to by campers and visitors in RVs, trailers, and other motorized vehicles. Highway 198 is the major road that connects this COE park to Sequoia National Park and other surrounding areas.

Parking

Parking options are available for RVs, trailers, and cars at Kaweah Lake for campers and visitors to use. The campground in the park also has parking pads for motorhomes. Overnight parking is available.

Horse Creek Campground

Located in the foothills of central California's Sierra Nevada Mountains, Horse Creek Campground features 80 pet-friendly campsites that are equipped with restrooms, flush toilets, showers, and a trailer dump station. All the campsites are without RV hookups, but all have tables and fire rings. RV length limit is 80 feet. An amphitheater in the campground holds weekend programs during peak season.

Owing to the fact that Horse Creek campground is located just 10 miles from Sequoia National Park, campers can visit the national park to enjoy the view of General Sherman Tree and Giant Forest Grove.

Campsites in this Army COE campground are available by reservation. Quiet Hours are from 10pm to 6am.

Off-Season

Park Programs

Park programs and events are organized at Kaweah Lake to keep visitors and campers engaged. For example, campfire programs in Horse Creek Campground educate campers about fire safety, astronomy, reptiles and a host of other interesting topics. National Public Lands Day involves paying tribute to the public lands in the area by cleaning and maintaining plants and facilities while enjoying meals, and local live music. Other events like regional fairs, local festivals, and exhibits are ways that campers are kept entertained in this COE park.

Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Park

Just 10 miles east of Kaweah Lake is Sequoia National Park, one of the first parks in the US, well known as the home of the giant Sequoias. Your visit to this park will offer you the chance to see and explore the largest living tree in the world - General Sherman Tree; the highest mountain in the contiguous 48 states – Mt. Whitney; glacial canyons, caves, oak woodlands and lush meadows. Just north of Sequoia National Park is Kings Canyon National Park, home to the deepest canyon in the US. Recreational opportunities abound in these parks for adventurous campers at Kaweah Lake to explore and enjoy.

Water Recreation

A variety of opportunities to participate in water-related recreational activities are open to campers at Kaweah Lake, making the park a popular destination among boaters, skiers and paddlers. Moreover, there are plenty of spots to begin exploring the park’s waters, seeing as the park features launch ramps at Lemon Hill, Kaweah, and Slick Rock recreation areas. Feel free to come along with your vessels attached to your rigs or visit the marina in the park for boating supplies and rentals.

In-Season

Day Use Recreation

There’s no way you’ll ever get bored at Kaweah Lake, owing to the fact that there are four recreation areas that offer plenty of exciting opportunities to enjoy recreational activities. Whether you set base at Lemon Hill, Slick Rock, Kaweah or Horse Creek recreation area, you’ll be able to enjoy picnics and outdoor meals with family and/or friends. All the recreation areas are equipped with potable water and tables, and provide access to swimming areas.

Birding

Every year, more than 1 billion birds migrate along the Pacific Flyway, a corridor that extends from the North Slope of Alaska, all the way to California and down to South America. Interestingly, Kaweah Lake lies along this corridor, so that campers and bird watchers often enjoy seeing them as they migrate. You should look out for least tern, black-footed albatross, and western sandpipers in the park and be sure to record your sightings. Having your own binoculars definitely helps when bird watching.

Fishing

Fishing opportunities abound at Kaweah Lake for campers and visitors who enjoy the sport. Whatever the skill level of the angler, the experience is still exciting. Fishing options are available both in the lake in the park and also in the streams. Crappie, largemouth bass, bluegill, rainbow trout, and catfish are some of the most commonly caught fishes in the park. RV campers and visitors who want to fish in the park can purchase fishing licenses and supplies in nearby towns.
