Getting Outdoors

Making the time to get outdoors and enjoy nature is a great way for the family to reconnect. Calaveras Big Trees State Park has seven well-maintained hiking trails. There are also several fire roads where hikers are allowed. The hiking trails range in difficulty from easy to strenuous, with many of the trails leading past the giant sequoias or along the Stanislaus River. When you get to the park, stop at the park office for a map of the various trails and fire roads throughout the park.

Children can learn more about the state park and become more involved with preserving the natural resources within the parks by becoming a Junior Ranger. This program is designed for seven to twelve-year-olds and is led by a park ranger. The Junior Rangers will learn about the park while earning park mementos and their Junior Ranger certificate. Younger children between three and six years old can join the Junior Cubs program and learn about the park through age-appropriate activities and lessons.

The fun at Calaveras Big Trees State Park doesn't end in the fall. Many winter activities are on offer here, so bring your family and camp in an RV at Calaveras Big Trees State Park for a quick winter getaway. Snowshoe tours are offered by park rangers during the winter months when the snow is deep enough. Tours generally last about an hour and a half, so dress in warm clothing. After the tour, drop in and warm up at the Warming Hut, open for guests from Thanksgiving through the end of March. This is a great place to connect with other park visitors while sipping warm drinks around a welcoming fire.

Camping at Calaveras Big Trees State Park

RV camping at Calaveras Big Trees State Park is convenient and comfortable thanks to a range of modern amenities. More than 120 sites between two campgrounds offer easy access to restrooms, showers, fire rings, picnic tables, and drinking water. The maximum length for motorhomes is 30 feet. If you're not camping in a motorhome, you can reserve one of the park's four fully equipped cabins.

Flag City RV Resort in Lodi is a great alternative for those who'd prefer to camp near Calaveras Big Tree State Park. Guests can enjoy a heated swimming pool and spa when not out exploring the state park or surrounding area. There are three laundry facilities located at this RV resort, along with modern, clean restrooms and showers. Full hookups with 20, 30, and 50-amp electricity, water are available.

Park your RV in Manteca at the Turtle Beach RV Resort and enjoy a campsite that overlooks the San Joaquin River. This is a limited-service campground, but some campsites come with full hookups. Restrooms and showers are centrally located within the campground. While there's not a convenience store located at the RV resort, downtown Manteca is only minutes away, with many shops and restaurants.

Exploring the Area

After exploring Calaveras Big Trees State Park, stop into Lodi and check out the Micke Grove Zoo. This is a small zoo, only about five acres, located inside the Micke Grove Regional Park. The zoo houses animals native to California as well as several exotic and endangered species from across the globe, including the black-and-white ruffed lemur and the cotton-top tamarin. Visitors can enjoy the Tropical Forest Canopy and the Island Lost In Time.

While visiting the Micke Grove Zoo, take time to see the World of Wonders Science Museum, also in Lodi. This museum offers hands-on exhibits that are science-based and perfect for all ages. The main exhibits offer learning experiences on magnetism, energy, optics, and electricity. This museum was founded to inspire interest in STEM careers and to complement traditional or formal educational experiences.

While planning your Calaveras Big Trees State Park camping trip, make sure you leave enough time to visit Yosemite National Park in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Yosemite is only about two hours from Calaveras Big Trees State Park and would be a great end to a fantastic RV camping getaway.
