Doheny State Beach is one of Southern California’s most popular campgrounds and beaches. It’s located in the city of Dana Point, which sits right between Los Angeles and San Diego. Established in 1931 as California’s first state beach, Doheny spans 62 acres of beautiful oceanfront fun.

You can reserve campsites on the beachfront or in the park year-round. The beach is famous for surfing. It’s even mentioned in a couple of songs by the Beach Boys! But regardless of whether you want to catch some waves, go for a picnic with the family, play some volleyball, or just sunbathe, you’ll find Doheny has all you need to relax and have a great time. Check out all the RV rentals in Orange County and get ready for a vacation you’ll never forget.

Getting Outdoors

The number of activities available in and around Doheny State Beach is one reason it’s so popular. The beach is a surfing hotspot for experts and novices alike. Kayaking and paddleboarding are also popular among campers. Be sure to explore the tide pools, home to several species of creatures. During low tide, you will find sea stars, crabs, mollusks, limpets and anemones. Just remember to tread lightly; marine life isn’t to be observed, not disturbed.

One of the best parts about camping with an RV is the time you spend outside in the fresh air. The average sunny and 70-degree weather in Dana Point perfectly accommodates the RV camping lifestyle. Picnic tables and volleyball courts are first-come, first-served. But you can also reserve a table or court up to seven months in advance, which might be a good idea considering this park can get pretty busy during the peak season. You can also rent pretty much anything else that won’t fit into your RV rental while camping at Doheny State Beach. The beach rental shops offer surfing equipment, toys, beach chairs, and more.

Another great perk? Much of the beach and campground facilities are wheelchair-accessible. There are wheelchair-accessible campsites, a beach boardwalk, trails, restrooms, showers, and more. Beach wheelchairs are also available.

Camping at Doheny State Beach

On the north side of Doheny State Beach, you can find fun activities, such as surfing, volleyball, and picnicking on the five-acre lawn. The campground is on the south side of the beach. There are 16 sites designated for RVs up to 35 feet long; a few of the sites are only a short distance from the water. Each site comes with the standard fire pit and picnic table. You’ll also find two restroom and shower buildings to use while camping at Doheny State Beach.

An important note: Doheny is a dry campground. This means that, while the park provides a sanitation station, there are no hookups at all.

Doheny is dog-friendly, so feel free to bring your pooch. Just be sure to keep your pup on a leash and in the campsite and picnic areas; the beach is off limits to furry friends. Bring Fido into your RV rental with you at night. Also, you must reserve your site at least 48 hours in advance, as the park doesn’t allow same-day reservations.

Exploring the Area

The city boasts a number of activities for Dana Point campers outside of the state beach. Catch a whale watching tour off the Orange County coast. Get ready to see whales, dolphins, and other marine life. Parasailing and surf fishing are also popular pastimes for visitors to the area.

Dana Point hosts multiple exciting festivals throughout the year, including the Festival of Whales in March, the Blues Festival in May, the Surf and Art Festival in June, and the Tall Ships Festival in September. If you’re interested in learning about the state’s maritime history, take a field trip to the Ocean Institute, located just a few miles from the state beach.

While camping at Doheny, you’ll find plenty of eatery options in the area. Take your pick between a lobster dish at an ocean-view restaurant, barbecue ribs at a local joint, or a quick bite at a convenient fast food chain. You can also find grocery stores and gas stations in Dana Point. You can find fresh produce at the city’s monthly farmers’ market.

If you’re looking to explore the surrounding area, take the quick 40-minute drive to Disneyland in Anaheim. Additionally, Los Angeles and San Diego are each less than 90 minutes away. Return to your cozy rental RV after a long day of exploring the best of sunny Southern California.
