Getting Outdoors
Rimmed by white-capped mountains, this alpine reservoir is serene and quiet. A mix of tall pines and gnarled oaks blanket the shores of the Ice House Reservoir. A hidden gem, as tourists crowding around the reservoir is an exceedingly rare event. Hikers occasionally appear and disappear behind the trees as they explore the perimeter. A lone fisherman, ignoring the disused boat ramp, casts his fly from the banks. High overhead, a lone bird - perhaps an eagle - soars in lazy spirals.Anglers can expect to catch rainbow, brown, and brook trout, which are supplied by USDA Forest Services. Though swimming is possible, the water temperature rarely rises above frigid even in late summers. Tentative dips into the water are often short-lived, accompanied by startling shrieks as people escape the chilly water. For the brave, hardy souls, whitewater rafting on the local rivers is a fun activity in late spring and early summer. As the snowmelt drains away, tubing is a calmer option.Fed by snowmelt, streams and brooks bounce and gurgle their ways over rocks, sometimes joining to form larger waterfalls. Bridal Veil, just off the Highway 50 near Pollock Pines, is one of the better-known falls in the area. To the northeast, near Union Valley Reservoir, is Bassi Falls, a low waterfall that gushes in one wide veil.Rock climbers are often spotted spidering across a cliff face, somehow finding handholds on an impossibly sheer, flat granite walls. Some of the more popular climbing spots include the Hogsback, Lower Buttress, and Dear John. Most climbs range from moderate to difficult (5.9 and up), but there are easier routes in the area.Nestled in the heart of Eldorado National Forest, there are many miles of hiking trails, dirt roads, and fire roads around the reservoir. Wild animals, seeking convenient short cuts, often share these trails. Hikers will occasionally find evidence of their presence in the form of pawprints or scat but rarely will see them. Mountain lions, bobcats, and bears are exceedingly shy and cautious.
Camping at Ice House Reservoir
When you get here, of course, you’ll need someplace to park your RV rental. Camping at Ice House Reservoir is a popular activity. There are a handful of established RV campgrounds lining the shores. Ice House Campground is open from late May till early October. Its offerings are somewhat primitive, though there are fire rings, water faucets for drinking water and pit toilets. The boat launch is nearby, which is a nice plus.On the north end of the lake are Northwind Campground and Strawberry Point Campground. Both campgrounds are smaller and more primitive, with limited sites, and no running water.Set back into the trees, the Silver Creek Campground may be another option. Close to a babbling creek, guests can try their luck at panning for gold and searching for silver. Fishing for trout is excellent, too.Camping with an RV near Ice House Reservoir comes with its risks. Some wildlife - bears, and raccoons in particular - are known to be enthusiastic about stealing visitors’ food. As a result, campers are advised to keep all food in hard-sided vehicles instead of bear cans.

Renting this trailer was a great experience top to bottom. The trailer worked perfect for our trip and everything functioned as it should. I was met for pickup and delivery by Ciara and her husband and they were both very kind and knowledgeable about the unit. Super quick and easy. A+ for both the trailer and wonderful hosts.-Nate
Kyle was great to rent from. Pre-trip experience was great and him responding to questions we had during the trip was clear and fast. Thanks for the hospitality Kyle!
We had a great time on our trip, the RV was everything and more. It was perfect for the three of us and handled our trip wonderfully. We drove through three states and back with no problems and would do it again. Thank you Wallace for your great communication and RV. 12/10
