Several miles to the east of Alberta’s capital, Edmonton, Sherwood Park is the province’s seventh largest city. Most visitors who book an RV in Sherwood Park, Alberta are looking for a place to stay away from the crowds of the capital but are still interested in experiencing all of the attractions that the city has to offer.

Depending on where you base yourself in the Sherwood Park area, it takes less than an hour to get into Edmonton on public transportation. Buses run every half hour and using them may be more convenient than driving your Sherwood Park RV rental into the city.

That being said, Sherwood Park has a few attractions of its own that are well worth visiting when renting an RV in Sherwood Park.

Discover Sherwood Park

RV Parks in Sherwood Park

While the nearby city of Edmonton has quite a few RV parks along its outskirts, your choices are limited in the Sherwood Park area. Not as many travelers make their way out to the eastern suburb even though it’s just off Alberta Highway 16 - the major roadway connection to the city of Saskatoon and Regina in Saskatchewan.

Half Moon Lake Resort is about 20 minutes to the southeast of Sherwood Park. Stand-up paddleboards, kayaks, and paddleboat rentals are available here and there’s even also a mini-golf course. The resort is located in a fairly rural setting and just steps from the massive Cooking Lake, which is really too shallow to do any water sports, but does attract a fair amount of wildlife for viewing.

Some other choices are located closer to Edmonton on the north and west side. St. Albert Kinsmen RV Park, Morinville RV Park and Campground, and Shakers Acres RV Park and Campground are all located very near to the capital and could be good choices if you intend to spend most of your time there with a Sherwood Park motorhome rental..

Exploring the City of Sherwood Park

Admittedly, Sherwood Park is a fairly sleepy community and most of the major attractions in the area will be found in Edmonton. However, as long as you’re not looking for nonstop entertainment, renting an RV in Sherwood Park is still a fantastic idea. You’ll get a better sense of what life is like in semi-rural northern Canada and won’t have any trouble finding a place to park your RV.

If you’re anything of a wine connoisseur you’ll want to make the trip out to Barr Estate Winery. While northern Alberta is hardly known for its vineyards, this little winery a few miles south of Sherwood Park is the perfect place for a tasting during your visit. You’ll have the opportunity to try several of their wines while learning about the science of growing wine grapes in the prairie lands.

The Festival Place theater in downtown Sherwood Park hosts concerts, plays, stand-up comedy, and other types of events throughout the year. Check out the calendar on their website to see if any of their performances pique your interest.

For an amazing shopping experience, you absolutely must visit the West Edmonton Mall - the largest shopping center in the Western Hemisphere. In addition to its 800 stores and 100 restaurants, it also contains a theme park (Galaxyland), waterpark, and ice skating rink, so there’s sure to be something to keep the kids entertained while you shop.

Getting Outside Near Sherwood Park

Most of the Sherwood Park area is populated with the winding streets and dead-end cul-de-sacs that you would expect in a suburban neighborhood. However, there are quite a few places to enjoy the great outdoors.

Broadmoor Lake Park and the Sherwood Park Athletic Club are great places to go if you’re looking for a little outdoor recreation. The park has several miles of trails surrounding Broadmoor Lake. During the winter, the lake freezes over and ice skating is possible. The hill above the northern section of the lake is also popular with toboggans during the colder months.

Looking to hit the links? Sherwood Park has three golf courses nearby. If you’re visiting during the colder months in an RV rental near Sherwood Park, AB and would like to do some shredding on your skis or snowboard, the 72-acre Sunridge Ski Area in Strathcona  has 11 runs for skiers, snowboarders, and a single run set aside for tubers to enjoy. It’s not very big, but what it lacks in size, it more than makes up for in convenience, as it’s located in the Strathcona Science Provincial Park 10 minutes from downtown Sherwood Park.
