Getting Outdoors

Hiking enthusiasts will be spoiled for choice, with dozens upon dozens of kilometers to explore. If you're looking for a short route packed with stunning vistas of the Selkirk Mountains, take the Rockgarden Trail. For a more challenging day hike, test your mettle on the Hermit Trail to experience the beauty of the alpine meadows. Experienced backpackers might want to tackle the Bald Hill Trail, a 26-mile (42-kilometer) trek with some seriously steep terrain.

History buffs will find plenty of historic sites to explore. Start your Glacier National Park camping adventure at the Rogers Pass National Historic Site, where you'll find a visitors' center packed with exhibits on the region's flora and fauna as well as informative displays on the Trans-Canada Highway. Pack a picnic and savor a leisurely lunch at the Summit Monument and Memory Garden, then snap a photo of the monument to the Trans-Canada Highway.

Avid anglers will find many fishing holes where they can test their lucky rod and reel. Try your hand reeling in cutthroat, rainbow, brook, and bull trout. Columbia River, which flows just outside the park's boundaries, is also a prime place to catch a variety of species. Don't forget to grab a national fishing permit if you're over 16 years of age.

Wildlife watching opportunities abound here, so pack the binoculars in your campervan rental. You'll have the opportunity to spot over 180 species of birds, including the elegant tundra swan and the noble bald eagle. More than 50 mammal species also roam the park, from skittish white-tailed deer to elusive coyotes, wolves, and bears.

This only scratches the surface of recreational activities at Glacier National Park. Whatever you and your camping crew like to do, this tranquil tract has an adventure to suit your tastes and skill levels.

Camping at Glacier National Park

With 95 frontcountry campsites spread across three campgrounds, parking your RV rental at Glacier National Park is easy. Loop Brook and Illecillewaet campgrounds are ideal for Glacier National Park campers seeking all the comforts of home, like hot showers, flush toilets, and kitchen shelters. Additional amenities include bear-proof food lockers and drinking water. Illecillewaet Campground is the larger of the two with 60 sites, while Loop Brook features a more intimate setting with 20 sites. While you won't find any hookups at any of the park's campgrounds, generator use is permitted at both campgrounds outside quiet hours.

Mount Sir Donald is perfect for those craving an off-the-grid motorhome camping experience. This primitive campground doesn't have restrooms, showers, drinking water, or food lockers. You'll want to arrive early, as all sites at Glacier National Park are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.

Exploring the Area

With so much to do, see, and experience within the park itself, you could easily spend weeks without ever venturing outside this wilderness. If you find yourself itching to return to civilization, steer your motorhome rental 40 minutes east toward the quaint community of Golden. Here, you'll find a variety of dining options, whether you're craving burgers, pizza, barbecue, Indian food, or Asian cuisine. Golden is also home to several gas stations along the Trans-Canada Highway.

With your belly and gas tank full, it's time to head out and explore your surroundings. The town of Revelstoke, located just over 35 minutes from the park, will win you over with a cozy downtown area and lashings of old-world charm. Trainspotters will want to stop by Revelstoke Railway Museum to get a glimpse of antique train cars from the Canada Pacific Railway. Revelstoke Museum and Archives showcases the area's history, from its origins as a railroad town at the dawn of the 20th century right through to its modern logging industry. After your history lesson, wander through the Heritage Garden for a breath of fresh air.

Venture into Radium Hot Springs to treat yourself to a relaxing soak in the calcium-rich waters of the community's namesake mineral springs. Radium Hot Springs is also the gateway to Kootenay National Park, making it a convenient place to extend your RV camping adventure.

The snow-dusted peaks of Glacier National Park provide a spectacular setting for a wide variety of activities in the great outdoors. Rent an RV and start planning the camping trip of a lifetime in the Great White North.
