Whitehorse, in the north of Canada, is the capital of the Yukon territory and a hotbed for adventure and recreational sports. Conveniently located between the basalt cliffs of Miles Canyon and the mountains of Kluane National Park, skiing, wildlife viewing, and paddling are just a few activities available when you rent an RV in Whitehorse. The area is also home to relaxing hot springs, educational centers, and aboriginal art displays. The Yukon River, which passes through the center of town, is popular with canoeists and kayakers who paddle from Lake Laberge. This is also one of the few places in the world where, between September and March, patient visitors can glimpse the Northern Lights.

The city sits at an altitude of 2,100 feet above sea level. The subarctic climate makes June to September the best time to rent a motorhome in Whitehorse for outdoor activities. December to February is the best season for snow sports. Whether you choose to visit in summer or winter you’ll have no problem picking up one of the RV rentals by owner in Whitehorse. The city is served by Erick Neilson International Airport and sits alongside the Alaska Highway and the North Klondike Highway which connects to Skagway and Dawson Creek.

The Great Outdoors

Kluane National Park and Reserve covers an area of more than 8,500 square miles. It encompasses magnificent ice fields, rich forests, and alpine lakes. It’s home to staggering peaks like Canada’s highest peak, Mount Logan. Visitors can take part in multiple recreational activities including summer hiking, mountaineering from April to June, and mountain biking on old mining roads. During the winter months, adventurers can try shoe shooing, downhill skiing and snowboarding, or test their endurance on cross-country skiing trails.

If you want to hit the coast, and are prepared for a drive, head toward Juneau. The drive is long but very scenic. Stop along the way at your leisure to view the stunning sights of everything you pass in your Whitehorse RV rental. While in Juneau you can go whale watching, view glaciers and tick another American state off your must-visit list.

Miles Canyon, named after General Nelson Miles, is located just outside of downtown Whitehorse. The canyon played a major role in transporting good during the California gold rush. Nowadays the river is a prime spot for whitewater rafting and kayaking. For visitors who prefer to keep their feet dry, the canyon can be seen via an 85-foot suspension bridge which crosses the canyon at its narrowest point.

Also located just outside of town is the Yukon Wildlife Preserve which extends for over 700 acres, providing a haven for many species of land mammal and birds. Elk, caribou and Canadian lynx can be seen from the visitors viewing platform. To explore even further, you can search for wildlife through the expansive reserve on foot or by bus. The animals are easiest to spot at feeding times. Visitors can also enjoy the outdoor picnic areas.

RV Parks

If you want to park your luxury RV rental in Whitehorse city center then there are a handful of campgrounds located within a five-minute drive. Hi Country RV Park is conveniently located at the main exit to Whitehorse Downtown from the Alaska Highway. Each full-service site has Wi-Fi and cable TV as well as 20 or 30 amp hookups. You can keep clean in the bathroom facilities and so can your RV with the unique RV wash.

The Caribou RV Park is slightly further south of town, but only one mile from the turnoff to Skagway at the Alaska-Klondike Highway junction. It offers spacious sites with 15 or 30-amp hookups and cable TV. Visitors have the option to eat in the onsite restaurant or get active on walking trails.

Whilst exploring the Kluane National Park the Cottonwood RV Park is a good place to call home. It’s located next door to Kluane Lake and the St Elias Mountains. This remote site offers hot showers and Wi-Fi as well as 15-amp pull-through sites and a small convenience store. If you can live without a hookup, there are unserviced lakeside sites with breathtaking views for RVs too.

Explore the City

When you’ve finished exploring the great outdoors in your Whitehorse camper rental make sure you schedule some time to visit the attractions that the city has to offer. The city hosts five small shopping centers as well as a variety of restaurants, cafes, and takeaways which offer a mixture of international cuisines.

If you’re interested in learning about the native plants and species, plus the effects of Yukon’s ice age, then the Yukon Beringia Interoperative Centre should be on your list. The eye-catching building hosts educational exhibitions of extinct animals from the ice age. These exhibitions display life-sized replicas of archaeological sites and animal skeletons. The center also documents the history of Yukon’s earliest human settlers and showcases artwork by both local and non-local artists.

Another excellent way to learn about the history of Yukon is by visiting the MacBride Museum of Yukon History. The museum presents the town's history from the first settlers to the Gold Rush era, right up to the present day. You can even see the museum from the outside by riding the restored MacBride Waterfront Trolley from the Round House to Rotary Park.

If you choose to rent an RV in February, check out the annual Yukon Sourdough Rendezvous, taking place in Whitehorse since 1964. It’s full of fun competitions like the Log Toss, Lip Sync Battle, and Call for the Cup. The Yukon Quest, a 1,000-mile sled dog race, is also held in February. During the summer Whitehorse hosts the Adaka Cultural Festival which highlights the arts and culture of Yukon’s First Nations.
