Choose your adventure: Big Frog Mountain and Cohutta Wilderness
This loop circumnavigates the Cohutta and Big Frog Wildernesses on gravel roads and some unimproved dirt roads. Hiking opportunities abound, and there are tons of vistas and waterfalls to see along the way. Don't miss the stop at Potato Patch Mountain or the short hike to Jacks River Falls and some great picnicking, swimming or rockhopping. Day one you will travel from Chattanooga, hit forest service roads and cruise among the pines and hardwoods of the Cohutta Wilderness. Not far into the woods, you'll find your first campsite along the Conasauga River. It's a small campground nestled along a small, shallow river. There is great swimming, fishing and hiking all around with views of Big Frog Mountain, the tallest around, in the background. Day two takes you on a long trip North looping around the outskirts of the wilderness on gravel and rougher dirt roads. Most of the day is spent along the high ridges of the forest with abundant views and chances to explore. Finish the day at Thunder Rock Campground along a gentler section of the Ocoee River. Bring some floats and lifejackets to float from one end of the campground to the other! The water makes for a peaceful night's sleep too. Day 3 keeps you in the forest and takes you back up along Northern edge of the park. You'll pass the trailhead to hike up Big Frog Mountain and then slowly descend out of the amounts, through some beautiful undeveloped valleys and back into the real world.
