Silverton is a small village in a valley high up in the Rocky Mountains of central Colorado. This phenomenal vacation destination was first founded as a silver mining settlement back in the 19th century, still carrying with it the designation of being a National Historic Landmark for its contribution to history, commerce, and local culture. Population numbers swell in the high seasons of winter and summer due to splendid mountain hiking, elegant vistas, historical sites, and winter recreation like skiing, snowmobiling, snowboarding, and tubing.

When you book an RV in Silverton, there are lots of places to explore. There are thousands of square miles of national forest land spread across the mountains surrounding Silverton, and the cities of Colorado Springs and Denver are a few hours’ drive away when you rent an RV and venture through the scenic mountain passes of the High Rockies.

Discover Silverton

The Great Outdoors

Not only is it easy to find some stellar parks and forests to visit during your Silverton camper rental vacation, but it is also almost impossible to truly avoid them. The village is deep in the mountains in the middle of sprawling evergreen forests in all directions. Ridgway State Park is one of the popular area destinations, with three different entrances to get into the secluded recreation space. The Ridgway Reservoir in the middle of the park is a great place to swim, fish, or boat, with marinas and sandy beaches all around its edges. Due to its abundance of wildlife, Ridgway State Park is a popular place to hunt or photograph wild animals, while hiking is the most commonly enjoyed activity. There are rental yurts, camping sites for you and your Silverton RV rental, and lots of fun to be had at this wheelchair-accessible state park in western Colorado.

Curecanti National Recreation Area is a stunning sight to behold when you travel north towards Gunnison. The park encapsulates a long stretch of the Gunnison River, as well as three reservoirs that are amazing for swimming and boating. There are three visitor centers, hundreds of hiking paths, several campgrounds, and two marinas where you can dock personal watercraft. Even wintertime brings with it some striking scenery, and some of the best ice fishing in Colorado.

Colorado has some of the country’s most extraordinary national parks. Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park is a breathtaking place in western Colorado that often goes overlooked. This fantastic river gorge is just downstream from Curecanti National Recreation Area, featuring some of the deepest and most spectacular canyonlands imaginable. The Black Canyon takes its name from the fact that it is so deep that the bottom only receives on average 30 minutes of sunlight every day, a mind-blowing illustration of just how much erosion into the Earth’s crust this ancient river has caused.

Mesa Verde National Park is the other major national park nearby, home to some of the most incredible cultural heritage spots in the southwest. The park is known for its jaw-dropping structures carved into the red stone mountains and cliff sides, and some of the best-preserved native villages in North America. You can buy food in the park, camp out in your Silverton RV rental, and tour homes and other ceremonial structures that will leave you absolutely amazed.

RV Parks

There are a handful of places to park your camper rental near Silverton, including Silverton Lakes RV Resort. There are tent and RV camping sites on the Animas River, on-site laundry facilities, short walks to downtown, ATV rentals, a general store, and more when you stay.

Silver Summit RV Park is also located in town, close to many of Silverton’s local diners and shops. There are spacious campsites, epic views, Wi-Fi, and jeep rentals for some off-road explorations in the mountains overlooking the town.

Ouray KOA is a bit outside of town to the north in the mountain pass, with unbeatable views of the valley, and fresh mountain air. The park has its own cafe, and a bar with great live music and mouthwatering Texas-style BBQ.

City Sightseeing

Considering its small size, Silverton offers an impressive assortment of fun activities and sightseeing opportunities. The town’s main roads are lined with old brick buildings, a throwback to the Wild West era that saw thousands of prospectors and miners pour into the valley to make a living. The Silverton Visitor Center should be your first stop after you pick up your Silverton motorhome rental, as it has a bounty of information and maps to help you make the most of your trip.

Since Silverton is the county seat of San Juan County, it is home to the San Juan County Historical Society. This fantastic site serves to protect and preserve the distinct culture of the High Rockies, and the legacy of mining that helped put it on the map. You can learn a lot by taking a guided tour through its museum, housing an impressive offering of artifacts and mining implements. There is a restored jailhouse and post office built over a century ago, and many other treasures to behold in the museum. The Idarado Mine and the Mayflower Gold Mill further add to the town’s mining legacy, and you can tour both to get a feel for what life was like for the first people to settle down in Silverton.

If you want to enjoy a bit of wintertime recreation, you can hit the slopes at Silverton Mountain for some awesome skiing and snowboarding. Silverton Mountain has a much different feel to it than the more resort-like mountains to the north, with a friendly vibe and lots of ski trails suited for a variety of skill levels. You can even take a helicopter ride and try heli-skiing high up on the tallest peaks in the Rocky Mountains, for an unbeatable alpine experience.
