The highest elevation in a Colorado paved state highway, reaching heights of over 12,000 feet. During the non-winter months you can reach the scenic overlook which will allow you to see alpine environments and Mount Elbert, Colorado's highest peak and the second-highest mountain in the U.S. Its wild terrain attracts rock climbers, backcountry skiers and pro cyclists.
Heaton Bay Campground is located on the shores of Lake Dillon surrounded by mountains such as the Tenmile Range, Gore Range and the Continental Divide. Reservations are available at this campground so book in advance.
The camp sites are located on the shores of the Roaring Fork River, within the 2.3 million acre White River National Forest, which has 8 wilderness areas and 10 peaks over 14,000 feet in elevation. Known for its fly fishing, the Roaring Fork River is home to large rainbow, brown, cutthroat and brook trout. You can also hike and find bighorn sheep and bull elk.

Located at the location used by the mountain infantry division for training during World War II there are numerous trails that depart the campground and allow you and the family to explore the scenic area. McCullough Gulch Trail is a 2.8 mile moderate trail within vicinity of the Blue River which has views of multiple lakes and waterfalls once you reach the 11,915 foot peak. You can hike and snowshoe and it is accessible from June until October. Dogs are allowed on the trail.
