Perched high up on a scenic alpine meadow on the western edge of the Grand Mesa, Vega State Park is a year-round wonderland offering fantastic recreation opportunities for adventure with an RV rental near Collbran. The park sits at almost 8000 feet above sea level on a stunning setting just a few miles away from Grand Junction. Situated a stone-throws away from the sprawling Grand Mesa Natural Forest, it would be a good idea to set up base camp for your Collbran camper rental at Vega State Park should you be interested in combing through the hundreds of acres of trails in the massive area. Search for an RV in Mesa County and make countless memories camping at Vega State Park.

This stunning park currently sits on land that was once a swampy shoreline of a large inland sea back in the Paleozoic era. Open all year round; the park is centered by a vast alpine lake that is a great fishing spot. Boasting a multitude of fun activities, the park is great, especially for motorhome camping enthusiasts seeking to cure their travel wanderlust. With the park being only surrounded by small towns such as Mesa and Parachute, light pollution is kept at a minimum so bring along a camera in your rental motorhome at Vega State Park as the night shots of the sky are to die for. The park varies greatly from season to season, leaving you to consider visiting at least twice to experience the full fun package that Vega State Park has to offer.

Discover Vega State Park

Getting Outdoors

Just like other Colorado state parks, the visitor’s center is perfect for learning about the different activities available at Vega State Park. Fishing here is decent, but only trout is available. Since the lake bed is full of rocks, avoid fishing deep unless you’ve got a boat since the rocks will keep catching your hooks.

Even though swimming is not allowed, the lake is a paradise for water sports. Some of the activities here include jet-skiing, windsurfing, and water skiing so you’ll never get bored. During the cold months, the frozen lake bed is usually open to ice fishing.

Although the park offers limited options when it comes to hiking, perhaps you can mix up hunting with some birding. Apart from the common hummingbird, expect to catch glimpses of western scrub-jay and even Virginia’s warbler. During specific seasons, Vega State Park is open to archery and shotgun hunting but you of course first need a license which can be obtained at the visitor’s center.

Camping at Vega State Park

If you thought the park’s photos on magazines looked great, wait until you see the park in person. Vega State Park will find its way to your list of favorite campgrounds. It’s no doubt that Colorado is home to some of the best campgrounds in the nation and Vega State Park is no exception. When you state park RV camp here, you’ll have the option between three campgrounds.

With a total of 33 campsites, the Early Settlers Campground is the most popular one in the park offering both electric and water hookups. It fills up quickly, so it would be a wise idea to book a site well in advance.

An alternative would be the Aspen Grove Campground which has a combination of back-in and pull-thru sites that add up to a total of 27 options. For facilities, there is access to hot showers, vault toilets, and conveniently set up water pumps. If you’ve got some extra bucks to spare, you’ll love it at the tree-lined private sites.

With 39 campsites, Oak Point Campground is the largest in the park. Just like Aspen Grove, the campground is complete with vault toilets and water pumps, and an ADA accessible fishing pier and boat ramp.

Exploring the Area

After a couple of days camping at Vega State Park, venture out to find even more cool activities beyond the park boundaries. For off-road adventurists, the Grand Mesa is rated as one of the most popular offroading areas in the state. Unhook your RV rental, grab your helmet, and get your car dirty. Whether you’re a beginner or a fine master who likes riding on the edge, the vast park offers something for everyone.

It would be a shame to pack up and leave without visiting Grand Junction. If golf is your thing, start your tour at the Chipeta Golf Course or maybe the bigger Lincoln Park Golf Course. Follow it up a short trip to the picturesque Colorado National Monument, for some spectacular pictures. If you’re up for some mind-blowing views, do it at sunrise.

Bring out your inner cowboy by popping in at the Museum of the West and see what life was like for the pioneers. With the Colorado River being the best for stand-up paddleboarding, you don’t want to miss out. Don’t worry if you’re a beginner as the calm waters between Palisade and Fruita are perfect for learners.
