Getting Outdoors

Although it may not be the first thing that comes to mind, biking is a very popular activity at James M. Robb Colorado River State Park. There are many paved bike paths, some that will connect you to other sections of the park while others will take you into Grand Junction. Many of the paved biking trails connect to mountain biking trailheads, making it easy to explore different parts of the park on two wheels. When you’re feeling adventurous, head up to the Palisade Rim Trail, which is a single track trail offering magnificent views of the surrounding valley.

Camping at James M. Robb Colorado River State Park will give you plenty of access to the Colorado River, and boating on the river is a unique experience worth seeking out. Hand propelled crafts, like canoe and kayaks, in addition to electric, sail-powered boats, can be launched and used on Corn Lake. This small lake runs parallel to the river, and access to the Colorado River can be had from the same launches used for the lake.

Hiking is also possible in James M. Robb Colorado River State Park, both on paved hiking trails and on natural trails. Pets are welcome on hikes so long as they are always leashed, and there are approximately 10 miles of trails in total to explore. The paved trail runs from Corn Lake to the Wildlife Area, while the Connected Lakes has its own 4 miles of trails that surround the lake itself. There are two different campgrounds at James M. Robb Colorado River State Park for campers to choose from. The Island Acres campground has 74 RV compatible campsites, of which 40 have full hookups, and 34 have just electricity. This campsite also has picnic tables, fire rings, and grills at each of the sites for campers to enjoy at their convenience.

The other campground, known as the Fruita section, has 44 RV compatible campsites. These campsites are evenly split between full hookups and just electricity, so when you know the dates you’ll be camping, be sure to reserve a spot ahead of time. All campsites at this campground also have fire rings, picnic tables, and stand up grills. Additionally, all campsites are pet-friendly so long as they are kept on a leash and controlled at all times.

Exploring the Area

Clifton, which is right next to Grand Junction, is one of the closest small cities to visit while you have a motorhome rental at James M. Robb Colorado River State Park. Clifton is home to the Museums of Western Colorado: Cross Orchards Historic Site and the Grand Valley Model Railroad Club, both of which are exciting ways to spend the afternoon. You’ll also find a small assortment of restaurants in Clifton, including Mexican and fast food options.

More food can be found in Grand Junction, as it is home to the Colorado Mesa University campus. This larger city has dozens of food options to choose from, a lot of which are near the university campus. Don’t be afraid to pick up food to go somewhere and then head to Lincoln Park for a scroll with a mountain view.

Also in Grand Junction are an assortment of museums, including the Museum of the West: Museums of Western Colorado, the Eureka! McConnell Science Museum, Robintix’s Alley Art Window, and Cross History Farm. Between these museums, it is possible to learn about the history of the region, see local artist’s paintings and sculptures, explore scientific principles, and more.
