Discover Ochlockonee River State Park

Getting Outdoors

Nestled in a tranquil location on the shores of the Ochlockonee River, this gem of the Florida state parks system is best known for its fishing. The river's brackish waters mean it's a wonderful destination for both freshwater and saltwater fishing, with bream, speckled perch, catfish, and largemouth bass just some of the species caught here.

You can cast a line straight from the shoreline within the park, set yourself up on an accessible dock on the nearby Dead River, or take advantage of the park's boat ramp. However, take note that you may need to get a fishing license before you can try your luck hooking a big one.

You'll also need to share the river with other campers and leisure-seekers. Tubing and water skiing are hugely popular in the summer months, but perhaps the best way to explore this undeveloped waterway is to rent a canoe or kayak from the ranger station. With mile after mile of pristine tidal waters to explore, you could spend a whole day paddling and still not see everything there is to see. Make sure you grab a map from the ranger station (or check one out online) so you can plan the best route in advance.

But the list of activities in Ochlockonee River State Park doesn't end there. If you want to escape the summer heat, you'll want to check out the swimming area on the Dead River in the park's day-use area. If you're a keen birder, set out on an Ochlockonee River State Park hiking trail (there are two to choose from) while you try to catch a glimpse of a red-cockaded woodpecker, an eagle, or a Bachman's sparrow.

Finally, because the park is located in an area that's largely free of light pollution, there are spectacular stargazing opportunities on offer once the sun goes down.

Camping at Ochlockonee River State Park

So, you want to camp in an RV in Ochlockonee River State Park? Make sure you book an RV in Wakulla County before reserving a spot in the 30-site campground. Nestled in wooded surroundings, the campground can accommodate RVs on most sites, with the largest sites capable of accommodating campervans up to 40 feet in length.

All sites have water hookups, while 28 of them have 30-amp electricity and the remaining two have 50-amp electricity. Water hookups, fire rings, picnic tables, and clotheslines are provided at all sites.

The comfort station is easily accessible from all campsites and features hot showers and flushing toilets. There's also a sink for when you need to do the dishes, and a dump station is provided for added convenience.

Pets are welcome in the campground, so you're more than welcome to stay in Ochlockonee River State Park with dogs. However, just make sure you keep your pet on a leash and clean up after them at all times.

Exploring the Area

When your Ochlockonee River State Park camping vacation comes to an end, why not take the time to check out some other great local attractions?

If you'd like to keep exploring the Florida state parks system, you'll be pleased to hear that Bald Point State Park is just over a half an hour to the southeast. If you like swimming, fishing, or just being outdoors, this is a park you'll be more than happy to visit.

For those who'd like to soak up the sun, sand, and surf of a glamorous resort town, Panama City Beach is less than two and a half hours to the west. While you're there, make sure you take the kids to Shipwreck Island Water Park, or book tickets on a cruise out to beautiful Shell Island.

Finally, if you'd rather head for a major center, steer your motorhome rental north towards Tallahassee. The state capital has plenty of fascinating historic attractions to explore — the Museum of Florida History is a real favorite.

When you rent a camper near Ochlockonee River State Park, you open up a whole world of travel experiences. Make sure you leave some time in your itinerary to check some of them out.
