Discover Reims

Located in northern France, just over an hour and a half away from Paris, Reims is a charming city rich with landmarks of great historical and cultural importance. One of its main attractions is Reims Cathedral, where, throughout history, generations of monarchs were crowned. Another of Reims' claims to fame is its champagne. Below the city streets, caves and ancient passageways provide an ideal place to age the bottles of bubbly produced in the city.

The city is teeming with hidden gems, too, like museums that organize special events, chapels painted by renowned artists, beautiful villas, magnificent basilicas, and many more. If you're a history buff, an aspiring artist, or an architecture enthusiast, Remis is a bottomless well of inspiration.

Although there are plenty of lodging options for tourists, those who prefer to spend time in the great outdoors will want to book an RV in Reims and explore the city at their leisure. With an RV rental, you're free to extend your adventure into nearby cities such as Laon (34 miles away) or Soissons (36 miles away).

The Great Outdoors

Montagne de Reims Regional Natural Park covers over 200 square miles and encompasses more than 60 villages and 100 miles of hiking trails. Wander through the woods, explore ancient villages and quaint churches, or tour an authentic Champagne vineyard. Admiring the dwarf beech trees of the Faux de Verzy is a must for nature photographers. For a birds-eye view of the city, make your way to the top of Reims Mountain, which is a flat, forested hilltop rather than a rugged mountain peak.

Overlooking the lush greenery of Champagne is the majestic Chêne à la Vierge National Forest, an outdoor oasis that shelters unique plant species. Plant lovers come here to explore the botanical trail, while mountain bikers will find a moderate challenge on the 18 miles of biking trails weaving through the forest.

Depending on where you choose to stay near Reims in an RV rental, there's another state forest worth seeing. The Forest of Hautvillers is a 1,000-acre woodland adjacent to the village of Hautvillers. The village is famous for its beautiful vineyards and is known as the cradle of champagne. This forest was once part of the Abbey of Hautvillers, where the father of champagne, Dom Pérignon, is buried.

Camping in Reims

Looking for a well-equipped campground where you can park your RV rental near Reims? Camping options are sparse in town. Consider Camping Municipal De Fismes in the nearby commune of Fismes. This campground is close to town and is open from April to September. More than 20 electric sites are available here for your motorhome rental, and pets are welcome.

Located a bit further afield at an hour and a half from Reims, Camping La Noue des Rois comes complete with more than 200 sites equipped with standard amenities and fun activities. In addition to electric hookups, water, clean restrooms, and shower houses, you'll also enjoy a swimming pool area with outdoor and indoor pools as well as water slides. You can also play tennis and volleyball, or participate in one of the scheduled events.

Exploring the City

One of the sites every tourist needs to visit is Notre-Dame de Reims, which is easily among the most important structures throughout all of Europe. Dozens of French kings were coronated here. This magnificent building dates back to the 13th century, and along with the stellar architecture and interior, it also boasts amazing statuary. There are over 2,000 statues within Notre-Dame de Reims, but the one that stands out from the rest is the smiling angel.

Another place that tourists find interesting is the Palace of Tau. Although it's a modernized museum today, the two rooms, the Tau Palace and Palatine Chapel, maintain their Middle Ages ambiance. The Tau Room is of great historical importance, as this is where the coronation banquets took place. Artifacts on display include medieval tapestries, the chalice of Saint Remi, and the Talisman of Charlemagne. This impressive piece of jewelry studded with priceless gems dates back to the ninth century and changed hands through countless French royals over the centuries.

If you enjoy these history lessons, then head to the Cryptoporticus next. This serves as a reminder that Romans lived here, and it dates way back to the third century. According to historians and archeologists, the basement was used to store crops, while the court above ground was a popular place to walk. There are only a few of these structures in the whole world, and one of them is on the former Roman forum in Reims.

Once you get hungry, you can have a meal in one of the French restaurants located near the town center. You'll also find places that serve vegetarian fare, pizza, and Vietnamese, so you'll be spoiled for choice. In case you need gas for your RV rental in Reims, you should have no trouble finding a gas station.
