A busy city less than half an hour's drive of Atlanta, Union City, Georgia got its name when the National Farmers Union established their headquarters here in early 20th century. In 1908, the town was formally established under the leadership of Drewry Carmical who was also the town’s co-founder along with NFU president Charles Simon Barrett. Through the decades, Union City continued its progressive march forward, thanks to its proximity to the state capital and one of the busiest transport hubs in the world.

Amidst the blossoming dogwoods and crepe myrtles, the quiet neighborhoods and bustling business districts of Union City create just the right atmosphere as you slowly ease into the adventures that lie ahead. Book an RV in Union City, leave town for a couple of hours, and soon you’ll be in Blue Ridge country. While there, take a few turns on the road, and you’ll be greeted by North Georgia’s vineyards. Close by, a few bare rocks rise out of the earth daring you to climb while the surrounding state parks reward you with miles upon miles of hiking and multi-use trails to explore.

Monadnock Madness in Northern Georgia

A trio of monadnocks (bare rock mountains that abruptly rise out of the surrounding area) surrounds the Atlanta area. The Stone Mountain is one of most popular and developed, but if you want to escape the crowds and enjoy nature in its original state of beauty, drive your RV trailer rental from Union City to the Panola Mountain instead. Birding, tree-climbing, and orienteering are popular pursuits here, and you don't even have to be a certified outdoor enthusiast to find your way around the mountain's well-paved trails. Venture deeper into the pristine area of the Panola Mountain State Park on a ranger-led hike, and you’ll see unique ecosystems that Native Americans saw centuries ago.

In the summer of 1864, tens of thousands of Union and Confederate soldiers clashed in the area around the Kennesaw Mountain. More than 3,000 soldiers were lost, paving the way for the Confederates to declare (marginal) victory. Miles of earthworks, cannons, and other Civil War relics can still be seen today at the Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park. The real outdoor adventure awaits as you follow the 11-mile Battlefield Trail loop through open grassy battlefields and rolling forest on your way to the summit where the Atlanta city skyline comes into full view.

The foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains are only a couple of hours' drive away by motorhome rental in Union City. The Amicalola Falls State Park within the Chattahoochee National Forest is one of the most convenient entry points to the Blue Ridge Mountains. Along the way, spot hawks, owls, and falcons, and gaze up to a towering cliff to see white water run down through multiple tiers. Treat yourself with a winery tour in nearby Dahlonega.

Where to Park Your RV

Union City has no RV parks in town, but you'll find the nearest ones within a 15 to 20-mile radius. Numerous gas stations are located throughout so you can make a gas stop before leaving town for a campground search. The Atlanta West Campgrounds, Sweetwater Creek RV Reserve and Atlanta South RV Resorts are worth looking into. They all have full hookup sites, showers, and restrooms.

Drive your Union City RV rental by owner farther out to find some other campgrounds you might want to consider: Lakeside FamCamp (for military families), Banning Mills RV Park (with a river running through the grounds), and Atlanta Marietta Campground near the Kennesaw area. All have full hookup sites (except Lakeside) as well as restrooms and showers.

For a place to simply park and sleep, talk to the store manager of Walmart in Union City and see if you can spend a night or two in their parking lot while you explore the happenings in town. The store is along Jonesboro Road and open 24 hours.
