Craters of the Moon National Monument can be found near the small community of Carey, Idaho, in the south-central portion of the state. This area is very rural, with the nearest larger town being Twin Falls, which is over 60 miles to the southwest. The nearest larger city is also the state's capital, Boise, at almost 150 miles to the west. The park also sits a little more than 100 miles north of the borders the state shares with both Nevada and Utah.

This part of the state is characterized by hills covered in dry, rugged scrubland. The landscape that gives the park its name was created by lava flows millions of years ago. These help to add to the mystique of the area. Many outdoor recreational activities can be enjoyed here, including hiking, camping, and caving.

Getting Outdoors

Renting an RV at this park puts you within easy reach of the many amazing natural formations it makes available. There are multiple caves found throughout the park. These should be entered with caution as many were formed by lava flows. This causes them to have uneven, rocky surfaces. Some feature large openings, so they are easy to enter, others require visitors to squeeze through a tight place. The ranger offices and Visitor Center can provide details of each individual cave.

There are almost no trees, and therefore very little shade to be found at the park. The obvious result of this is that it can become incredibly hot when the summer sun is at its peak. Fortunately, the park offers plenty of activities to participate in during the cooler winter months, as well. Snowshoeing and cross-country skiing are very popular here. There are even some ranger-led adventures.

There are many hiking trails available at the park that can be enjoyed throughout the year. These can vary quite a bit in their length and in how difficult they are. Some form loops, while others require you to walk out and back using the same path. In general, these routes follow the ancient lava flows that shaped this wildland and offer incredible views of the rock formations these flows left behind.
