The 150-year-old tree growing out of Greensburg's courthouse tower is perhaps the city's most photographed attraction, a beacon to travelers who have arrived in a place brimming with small-town charm amidst relaxing nature within an hour’s drive of Indianapolis. Greensburg, aptly nicknamed the "Tree City," is now home to diverse industries and businesses, with strong transport connections to nearby cities.

Greensburg’s potential lies in its unique position on the road to some of southern Indiana’s natural wonders like the Morgan-Monroe State Forest and the Big Oaks National Wildlife Refuge. There are vast playgrounds for the nature lover who won't need to give up some of the comforts of home while outside. For the best of both worlds, search for an RV in Greensburg and let it take you on a fantastic journey.

Discover Greensburg

Discover Southern Indiana’s Natural Wonders

Let the scenic rolling hills of southeastern Indiana lead you to the almost 6,000-acre Versailles State Park, 45 minutes away by campervan rental from Greensburg. The area that the park now occupies was once under the sea as evidenced by the numerous fossils seen in the park. For those keen to take to the water, the 230-acre lake is an ideal place to launch a boat, kayak, or canoe. Easy and moderate hiking and mountain biking trails can also be found here along with some 20 miles of trails for horse riding.

Set your sights farther out for an encounter with a wide variety of wildlife. Drive your motorhome rental from Greensburg to the 50,000-acre Big Oaks National Wildlife Refuge less than an hour's drive away for a walk through the flatwoods. Fish at the Old Timbers Lake, scope out cerulean warblers, Henslow's sparrows, and a host of other resident and migratory birds. Also, keep your eyes peeled for mammals like white-tailed deer and bobcats.

For an energizing hike through mature hardwood forest, take your RV rental from Greensburg to Morgan-Monroe State Forest in Martinsville, 90 minutes’ drive out of town. Two 10-mile loop trails here beg exploration: The Three Lakes Trail and the Low Gap Trail. For scenery (especially brilliant fall colors) and undulating terrain with a long stretch of flat ground, hike the former. The latter features a similar terrain but with options to do shorter three-mile loops like the rugged Rock Shelter Loop and the Mason Ridge Loop offering valley views.

Where to Park Your RV

One of the closest RV parks in town is a KOA campground in Batesville. A handful of sites for the Greensburg travel trailer rental can also be found in St. Paul about the same distance from town. Most have full hookup sites, restrooms, and showers. Though only offering electric sites, Versailles State Park is another option if you wish to have some outdoor fun like fishing, boating, and kayaking.

If you can live without the amenities in exchange for a parking space in town, check with the local Walmart. You'll likely be allowed to stay in their lot if you've sought approval from the store manager prior to parking.

County Attractions Beyond the Courthouse Tower Tree

The historic tree growing out of the courthouse tower is hard to miss, so you'll probably want to take a good look at it first and know the history behind it. (It was already a sprig in the 1870s, with several others growing until some of them were removed for fear it might cause the tower to collapse.) Then make your way to the Decatur County Historical Museum to view Native American artifacts and memorabilia from the 18th through 20th centuries.

From here, explore the downtown area to see many of its mural installations and browse its gallery where many works of local and regional artists are occasionally on display. Then feast your eyes on the many iterations of Da Vinci's famous Last Supper painting at a local museum where close to 2,000 interpretations - from mother-of-pearl to porcelain to wood - are featured. Some of the pieces, collected by a retired pastor and his wife over 50 years, date back to as early as the late 1800s.

Fill your tank from one of the dozen gas stations in town for a day of sightseeing. Then reward yourself with a proper meal in one of Greensburg's restaurants. The town abounds with classic American eats, quick bites, and comfort food. National fast food chains are well-represented. There are also a few places to sample Mexican and Asian fare, along with a couple of places to sit down for grill fare. If you'd rather cook your meals from scratch, a dozen groceries and convenience stores will make ingredient-hunting easier for you.

Racing fans know to circle their calendar in late May when the Indianapolis 500 kicks off in. Rent an RV in Greensburg, and you’ll be less than an hour's drive away from the action. Plenty of racing and non-racing activities take place (including concerts, parades, driver meet-and-greet) before the green flag drops on the actual race day. Some interesting pre-race events include the "Fast Friday," the final practice day when teams take the speediest practice laps; "Pole Day," when drivers vie for their starting positions in the race; and "Carb(uretion) Day," when drivers get their final chance to practice in their race-day cars.

Whether you’re a racing enthusiast or not, find the best RV rental in Greensburg and put the rubber to the road for an exciting adventure ahead. So plan your trip today, and just go with wherever the road takes you.
