Protecting over 2,600 acres of land in the east-central part of Indiana, Summit Lake State Park is a popular destination for motorhome campers, birdwatchers, anglers, and hikers. In other words, don’t forget your camera, as you'll definitely capture some amazing images here.

Another advantage of Summit Lake State Park is its proximity to other urban cities like Muncie and New Castle. This location is ideal if you plan to explore the state of Indiana while you're RV camping at Summit Lake State Park. If you don't have your own vehicle, book an RV in Henry County or Delaware County. You'll find an array of affordable camper rentals in Muncie, New Castle, or Daleville, and you'll be minutes away from the park.

Discover Summit Lake State Park

Getting Outdoors

Summit Lake is, without a doubt, the park’s centerpiece attraction. However, at the southwest corner of the state park, visitors will also find Zeigler Woods Nature Preserve. Here, you'll have the opportunity to see thriving flora and fauna that's almost completely untouched by humans.

The park also has multiple hiking trails, so both rookies and experienced hikers can get their desired dose of exercise. Hiking veterans can hit Prairie Trail, which is two miles long and leads you through oak-hickory woods and scenic prairies. If you're a hiking novice, you can opt for the Beach Trail, which is almost a mile long but way easier to traverse in terms of terrain.

The trails are also ideal for birdwatching, as the park's shoreline, wildflower fields, and meadows are important habitats for birds. If you're lucky and observant, you might also spot some of the rare species like the bald eagle, black tern, and sandhill crane.

The lake provides activities throughout the whole year, so Summit Lake State Park campers come here to sunbathe, swim, boat, fish, or ice-fish. Launch your watercraft from one of three ramps in the park. Motorboats are welcome to explore the lake at idle speeds. Anglers can hope to catch walleye, crappie, catfish, and bluegill.

Fun recreational activities abound at Summit Lake State Park all year long. When the snow starts falling, winter wanderers can hit the cross-country ski trails. Just make sure to bring all the gear you'll need, as the park doesn't offer any winter equipment rentals.

Camping at Summit Lake State Park

The state park RV camping experience is truly amazing at Summit Lake. There are over 100 campsites with electric hookups, and some RV campsites come with water hookups. The campgrounds are also equipped with restrooms and showers, and guests can also access boat ramps and the fish cleaning station. You can book certain motorhome camping sites in advance, while some sites are strictly first-come, first-served.

During summer, you can book a site close to the lake so that the beach will be nearby and you can enjoy the views. Lastly, some campsites at Summit Lake State Park can fit rigs up to 100 feet long, so feel free to rent an RV that's big enough for the whole family.

Exploring the Area

Once the rural escape excitement has subsided, you can venture outside of the park and go to the bustling city of Muncie. On your way there, you'll pass by a few gas stations, should you need fuel. Once you arrive, you can treat yourself to a nice meal. Muncie has a decent selection of restaurants, so you get to choose from steakhouses, bar-and-grills, fast food joints, Japanese places, and Mexican restaurants.

Muncie is a great destination if you want to have fun with friends and family. You can have a truly eventful stay if you choose to visit the escape room experience. If you're traveling with children, there's an awesome museum that you should check out. The Muncie Children's Museum is basically an indoor playground where kids get to have fun and play with their peers. The interactive exhibits, including the barnyard, recycling center, and veterinarian's office, make learning fun for all ages. Check out the events schedule to see what's happening during your visit.

Finally, for all of the horror movies fan out there camping at Summit Lake State Park around Halloween, Muncie has a top-rated seasonal haunted house experience. The props, costumes, and sound effects all look convincingly sinister, so if you love the adrenaline-pumping tension and jump scares, make sure you don't miss out on this sensational attraction. (Just a heads-up: the haunted house isn't suitable for the faint of heart or for younger visitors.)
