Perched on the state line of Louisiana and Texas, South Toledo Bend State Park is perfect for setting up basecamp if you’re on a quest to explore what lies around the Toledo Bend Reservoir area. With its opening to the public in November of 2004, the park quickly became popular, especially among the motorhome camping circles due to its appealing recreation opportunities and amazing location. Occupying about 1000 acres, the park lies in the middle of a triangle created by Shreveport, LA, Baton Rouge, and Beaumont, TX. To experience the charm and serenity that the park offers search for an RV in Vernon Parish and make memories while you are RV camping at South Toledo Bend State Park.

Situated on several bluffs extending into the southern shores of the Toledo Bend Reservoir, the park is a favorite for locals and visitors who come from far and wide to experience the good fishing opportunities on offer here. Good is an understatement because, in 2015 and 2016, the reservoir was named by the Bassmaster Magazine as the best spot for bass fishing in the United States of America. Putting angling aside, the park offers a ton of activities including hiking, birding, and mountain biking. Unlike other parks in Louisiana, this park is the only one that permits the use of off-road vehicles. When you get your hands on the best Anacoco camper, you can have the time of your life camping with an RV at South Toledo Bend State Park.

Getting Outdoors

As far as parks go, this is one of the best state parks in Louisiana if you’re into state park RV camping. For the maximum experience here, bring along a pair of good hiking boots, a fishing rod, and a camera. Anglers will be spending a lot of time at the banks of the reservoir trying to get a nice catch. Apart from largemouth bass, the reservoir has a wide range of fish including white perch, bream, and catfish.

The healthy population of fish partially contributes to the wide variety of birds in the area. It isn’t uncommon to spot bald eagles resting on a tree-top or swooping a fish from the water. Just north of South Toledo Bend State Park lies the Bird Island. Although it’s visible from land, it is best seen on a boat in the water. Other common sightings to look forward to including the ring-necked duck, the black surf scoters, and the greater scaup. The lake also attracts the belted kingfisher and the American white pelican.

If you so choose, forego fishing completely and have a go at one of the many recreational trails located throughout the park. Appropriately named, the Lakeview Trail, it is awesome if you’re interested in great views of the lake. The Eagle Nest Trail is ideal if you’re looking for world-class photos of eagles making a catch. Located just near to the campground, the Hippie Point Hiking Trail is picturesque and breezy, perfect for a morning jog.
