There were two state parks created right next to the reservoir after its completion in 1966, and North Toledo Bend State Park is one of them. If you are an experienced hiker, the Trail Between the Lakes is for you. The trail is 28 miles long and will take you through the woods near the reservoir. Hikers will get to see the picturesque scenery and even spot some wild animals along the way, such as woodpeckers, foxes, and deers. North Toledo Bend State Park is attractive to birdwatchers as well. As you venture into the woods close to the water, birdwatchers might spot bald eagles flying over the reservoir, or ducks and egrets spending their time near the shore.

North Toledo Bend State Park Campground is large and well-equipped with all the necessities one might need during a motorhome camping trip. There are 63 campsites within the state park. All of these campsites can accommodate long vehicles and RVs. Additionally, campers will have access to showers, bathrooms, picnic areas, and playgrounds. Pets are welcome at the campground, but they are not allowed to enter any of the buildings and need to be kept on a leash at all times.

The campsites feature water and electric hookups, and campers may choose between 30 and 50-amp power, depending on their needs. Should you decide to stay at this campground, you may use its boat ramp to launch your vessel into the water. Reservations are not mandatory, but when you plan to visit North Toledo Bend State Park during the peak of the season, make sure you call the campground’s office in advance. Potential campers may also reserve their spot online.

Exploring the Area

Alexandria is a small and charming community in the east part of Louisiana. The city is located on the banks of the Red River, and it has something to offer to every visitor. Outdoorsy people who are camping at North Toledo Bend State Park could take a short drive to Alexandria and spend an eventful day getting to know this amazing place. If art is your thing, your first stop could be the Alexandria Museum of Art. Situated on the riverfront, this modern building houses a large collection of works made by local artists. Additionally, the museum features the biggest collection of folk art in the state of Louisiana. The museum also organizes lectures and workshops throughout the week, and they are open to everyone interested in learning more about the art.

Visitors may learn a lot about the history of Alexandria at Forts Randolph/Buhlow State Historic Site. These forts date back to the Civil War era and were built by the Confederates. They were restored and now serve as a small museum with hundreds of artifacts on display. The tour guides will be more than happy to show you around and tell you more about each exhibit. This historic site is right next to the Red River and has a lovely boardwalk that will allow you to enjoy the view of the surrounding nature.

Festivals are held throughout the year here in Alexandria. One of the most visited events is the Alexandria Mardi Gras. The celebration starts either in February or March, depending on the calendar. The colorful carnivals and parades take over the streets of Alexandria, making the entire city come alive.
