The Great Outdoors

While RV camping at Sandy Shores Campground, you'll be on the edge of Silver Lake State Park, which is known for its incredible sand dunes. In fact, it's one of the only places in the US where you can ride ATVs on sand dunes, and there's an open scrambling area where you can explore the terrain. Local outfitters offer ATV rentals as well as guided tours. The state park also has a huge sandy beach where you can relax and swim in the lake, or you can walk over to the shores of the massive Lake Michigan. You can also go fishing in Silver Lake from the shore; you'll have an opportunity to hook bass, walleye, crappie, and many other species. If you enjoy bicycling, be sure to visit the Hart-Montague Bicycle Trail when you book an RV in Oceana County. This paved trail is 22.5 miles long and runs between the cities of Hart and Montague. There are scenic overlooks and picnic areas throughout the path, and there are designated points for wildlife watching as well. In the winter, you can cross-country ski on the trail, and snowmobiling is allowed as long as there are at least four inches of snow.North of the campground is the Pentwater River State Game Area. If you enjoy hunting, this is one of the most accessible places to do it while camping in an RV at Sandy Shores Campground. There are designated sections for game hunting within the game area, and it's a particularly popular place for waterfowl hunting. Within the park, there are also hiking and cross-country ski trails to explore. On the northern edge of the game area, there is a boat launch where you can access the Pentwater River and Pentwater Lake.

Exploring The Area

Since Silver Lake is a popular vacation destination, there's plenty to do nearby. There is a grocery store right outside Sandy Shores Campground, where you can stock up on your essentials, as well as a gas station just down the road. There are a few restaurants by the lake as well where you can enjoy pizza, chicken, or classic American food. For even more food options, you can head to the nearby towns of Pentwater and Hart. For entertainment, there are multiple golf courses in the Silver Lake area, and there are also antique stores and other shopping options in nearby Pentwater. One of the easiest nearby towns to visit while motorhome camping near Mears is Muskegon, which is a short drive down the coast. Muskegon is home to the USS Silversides Submarine Museum. Here you'll find notable watercraft as well as exhibits on the history of the Navy and Coast Guard. History lovers will also want to check out the Lakeshore Museum Center and the Hackley & Hume Historic Site. The Muskegon Museum of Art also has displays of American and European art.Another easy day trip destination to visit while Sandy Shores Campground camping is the city of Grand Rapids. Although Grand Rapids is a small city, it is a very trendy, artsy community, and you'll find an array of galleries and interesting shops to explore. The vibrant city also has an excellent nightlife scene and is known for its breweries and restaurants. Grand Rapids also has several interesting museums and outdoor activities to explore. The Frederik Meijer Gardens, Millennium Park, and the John Ball Zoo are all fun activities to enjoy when the weather is warm. Notable museums include the Grand Rapids Art Museum, the Grand Rapids Public Museum, and the Gerald Ford Presidential Museum.

Questions about RVs?

Q.

What type of RV should I choose?

A.

Start by determining how many people are planning to travel with you. Going on a solo-journey? Choose a camper van or a teardrop trailer. Bringing the whole family along for the ride? Consider a spacious Class A or five-wheel.

You’ll also want to consider amenities. For example, if you’re planning to cook on the road, you’ll want a kitchenette. If your campground doesn’t have public restrooms, you’ll want to search RVs with bathrooms. Check out full descriptions of our models to help you decide here.

Q.

Do the RVs have bathrooms?

A.

Yes. Class A’s, Class B’s, and Class C’s and five-Wheels typically have bathrooms. Depending on where you plan on camping, you’ll want to double-check the availability of restrooms if selecting a rig without a bathroom. Nervous about renting an RV with a bathroom? Owners can help show you how to clean the tank or will offer to do it for you for a fee.

Q.

How does check-in work?

A.

Once an Owner approves your RV reservation, you can coordinate a time to pick up your rig or have it delivered to your doorstep or campsite. At that point, the owner will do a key exchange with you and walk you through the RV and answer any questions you might have.
