Getting Outdoors

Journeying into the epic wilderness off the beaten track is a surefire way to get in touch with nature. Not often visited by fellow fishermen, the only companion on Spoon Lake on a quiet, crisp morning might be a black bear or moose emerging from the woods for a wary drink of water. Listen for the call of an elk bugling nearby. Overnight, wolves sing to the moon, sharing mysteries of their world. Owls, too, are commonly heard, hooting at dusk as they prepare to go hunting. Several species of fish lurk in the depths of the cold, icy alpine water. Fish from the docks or the banks. A good day of skilled fishing can yield catches including brook, rainbow, and westslope cutthroat trout, yellow perch, and longnose sucker. Roast them over a small campfire for a delicious supper.

Camping at Spoon Lake

Skip the hotel scene and wake up to the sounds of nature. Birdsongs outside an RV rental, winds in the leaves, and the gurgle of water from a nearby stream. Though the sheer wilderness suggests that you can camp anywhere, the mountain roads are narrow with sharp hairpin turns. It’s often difficult to find a safe place to park. There are several RV camping options in the area. RV campsites at Sundance Campgrounds in Coram, MT, are set in deep woods, creating a sense of isolation. Restrooms and laundry are included as a part of their amenities.

Exploring the Area

Sometimes it’s good to rejoin civilization and socialize with people. Columbia Falls is just a few miles south of Spoon Lake. During the summer months, it holds several events and festivals that bring the local artisans, crafters, and people with trade skills into town. It’s a great way to find a one-of-a-kind art or sculpture to incorporate into a home’s decor. Rodeos and outdoor concerts are a fun way to blow some steam. Head into Whitefish, MT, for more of the same. Whitefish is especially known for its old-world frontier charm thanks to strict controls enacted by the town council to retain that atmosphere. Nearby Whitefish Ski Resort boasts dozens of runs that are enjoyed by adventurers year-round. Ride up the gondolas in summers and zip back down on one of the ziplines or alpine slides. When winter blankets the region in soft, deep snow, skiers swish and shush their way down 100 different runs in long, lazy turns.
