This small town is situated in the center of this very large state. It lies around 30 miles to the southeast of the state's capital, Helena, which is also the nearest larger city. The town of Bozeman lies around 60 miles to the south. Townsend's claim to fame is that it is the birthplace of the actor, Patrick Duffy.

A slew of unique shops, museums and even boat tours are offered nearby, while caves and arboretums are also available for exploring. Several locally-owned restaurants dot the area as well. There are also several National Forests and large lakes that can be found around the local region; all provide numerous recreational opportunities.
