Hiking is one of the most popular activities in the park, and three main trails can be found within the park’s boundaries. The Dog Canyon Trail, for instance, starts at the visitor center and climbs over 3,000 feet, leading hikers to the neighboring Lincoln National Forest.

As the park is near the Chihuahuan Desert, there are a lot of arid climate critters to seek out and observe. Campers can enjoy state park RV camping while visiting Oliver Lee Memorial State Park, as onsite state-run campgrounds provide over 40 campsites to choose from. Many of these campsites can be reserved ahead of time and are RV compatible. The campground accepts reservations ahead of time, so book your campsites after arranging the details of your RV rental when you are worried about availability.

There are campsites at this campground that have 20 and 30 amp hookups, in addition to water at some of the sites. All campsites have access to a centrally located dump station, showers, trash receptacles, and restrooms with flushing toilets. Each campsite has its own picnic table, fire ring, grill, and ample privacy. Pets are allowed so long as they are kept restrained, and campers will have easy access to both the visitor center and nearby hiking trails from their campsite.

Exploring the Area

Alamogordo is one of the closest, large towns to Oliver Lee Memorial State Park, and has plenty to offer to guests seeking modern conveniences. Alamogordo is home to a handful of museums, ranging from the New Mexico Museum of Space History to the Toy Train Depot. The former of these museums focus on the story of space exploration, while the latter is a unique museum that celebrates trains both large and small.

Also found in Alamogordo is the Shroud of Turin Museum and History Center, the Clyde Tombaugh Dome Theater & Planetarium, the American Armed Forces Museum, Alamogordo Airborne Park Museum, and the Tularosa Basin Museum of History, which focuses on regional natural and human history. Spending many days exploring these museums is easy, which is what makes it convenient to camp in an RV near Alamogordo.

Larger cities that can be found to the southwest of the park include Las Cruces in New Mexico and El Paso in Texas. Between these two large cities, you’ll find dozens of delicious restaurants, more museums, movie theaters, night clubs, breweries, family restaurants, and more.
