White Sands National Monument is located in south-central New Mexico, near the medium-sized town of Alamogordo. This locale is found only about 100 miles north of the international border with Mexico. The nearest larger city is El Paso, Texas, which is also about 100 miles to the south.

There are so many things to do in this part of the state! From outdoor activities such as hiking and exploring the local sand dunes, to museums, shopping opportunities, and plenty of unique restaurants, there is always something to do when you visit this region.

Getting Outdoors

Renting an RV at White Sands National Monument will make it easy to enjoy the many activities available here. There are numerous hiking trails located throughout the monument. They vary in length and difficulty level, with some being simple nature trails and others being lengthy, more difficult treks up and down the sand dunes. Hikers should be aware that temperatures in this area can frequently exceed 100 degrees, and the air is also very dry. It is encouraged that people carry a large amount of water and don't hike during the heat of the day.

Aside from hiking, there's plenty of other things to do at White Sands National Monument. Sand sledding on the dunes is one fun option, with sleds available for purchase at the monument's gift shop. There are also ranger-led educational programs and hikes where the history of the monument is discussed. They also talk about the unique ecosystems that comprise it and the critters that live here.

The White Sands Missile Range and Holloman Air Force Base are located just outside the park boundaries. These locations mean visitors to the park may be treated to fly-bys of various military aircraft while enjoying their time on the dunes. Dunes Drive is a road that traverses around 15 miles through the sand dunes, and it is appropriate for all vehicles. Portions of this road are sometimes closed when military exercises are occurring on the nearby missile range.

Camping at White Sands National Monument

You should have no trouble camping with an RV near White Sands National Monument. The only campsites available at the actual park are backcountry sites that have to be hiked out too. Fortunately, there are plenty of other campgrounds available throughout the nearby area.

Boot Hill RV Resort is on the north side of Alamogordo. The resort is off one of the main routes into town, so it shouldn't be hard to locate. The park offers bathrooms, showers, and exercise facilities for both humans and dogs. WiFi is also available for guests, and this camp can accommodate almost all sizes of RV's. Campsites that offer full hookups are an option, and the park allows for a variety of lengths of stays.

Camping is also available at Oliver Lee State Park, which is also found nearby. Water and electric hookups are available at many of the sites, and some pre-registrations can be made. There are sites that are always reserved to be handed out on a first-come-first-serve basis, as well. Modern bathrooms with flush toilets, potable water, shower facilities, and some vault toilets are also offered. As there are so many fun sites to see nearby, many people enjoy RV camping at White Sands National Monument, so it should be easy to locate any services you may need.

Exploring the Area

When you book an RV in Otero County, you will find there are all sorts of unique activities that the whole family can enjoy. The Alameda Park Zoo is located in Alamogordo. The animal exhibits offered here include species that are native to New Mexico, as well as those not common to North America. Some animals are available for petting and feeding. This park-like attraction also features a playground for children and picnic facilities, so feel free to bring a lunch. The New Mexico Museum of Space History is also found in town. Space missions that are intended for the future are also discussed. The museum includes a planetarium and an IMAX theatre that provide informational programs on the night sky.

The Heart of the Desert pistachio farm is also in Alamogordo. This working farm specializes in the little green nut, as well as wine. Sample tastings of its products are available here, and there is a large gift store where all of its products can be purchased. Some guided tours are also offered where you can observe the daily goings-on of the farm.
