Initially settled by Colonel Hermon Camp (an officer of the War of 1812), Trumansburg is a village in Tompkins County just to the north of Ithaca and 90 minutes' drive from Syracuse. The colonel’s Greek Revival house is still the largest in the village and is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places, alongside the William Austin House, the Indian Fort Road Site, and the Second Baptist Society of Ulysses.

Trumansburg is a popular residential area for faculty and staff of the nearby Cornell University and Ithaca College, as well as being a picturesque place to rent an RV. It’s within easy access of Finger Lakes National Forest and the waters of Cayuga Lake, not to mention an attractive choice of family-friendly RV campgrounds.

Discover Trumansburg

The Great Outdoors

Book an RV rental in Trumansburg and head west to the Finger Lakes National Forest, which is situated between Cayuga and Seneca lakes. It’s the only national forest in the state, encompassing forested woodlands, scenic pastures and rugged gorges that are traversed by around 30 miles of hiking trails. Opt for the short Burnt Hill Loop that takes in a diversity of landscapes or embark on the 12-mile long Interloken Trail for more of a challenge.

Just to the east of Trumansburg is Taughannock Falls State Park, which is named after the 215-foot plunge waterfall that it encompasses. It’s the highest single-drop waterfall east of the Rocky Mountains and is located along Taughannock Creek, which is framed by soaring cliffs up to 400 feet in height. Soak up the waterfall views along the Gorge Trail that leads to the base of the cascade or opt for the North Rim Trail while taking in views of the Upper Falls.

Taughannock Falls State Park hugs the western shore of Cayuga Lake, which is the longest of New York State’s glacial Finger Lakes. It’s a popular local fishing destination, with lake trout and smallmouth bass both caught here, together with brown trout, black crappie, and Atlantic salmon. You can get out on the water from one of the boat ramps in Taughannock Falls State Park or access those located in the Long Point State Park and Cayuga Lake State Park.

RV Parks

Pick up your motorhome rental in Trumansburg and make the short drive east to the Spruce Row Campsite, which is situated high above Cayuga Lake. There are around 200 sites to select from, as well as two playgrounds, a swimming pool, a mini-golf course, and a designated dog walking area.

Directly south of Trumansburg is the Pinecreek Campground where you’ll find a range of spacious full hookup RV and camper trailer sites. There’s an inviting swimming pool and an indoor arcade room, as well as a basketball court, horseshoe pits, and laundry facilities.

If you prefer a waterfront campground, head to the Sunset On Seneca Campsites on the eastern shore of Seneca Lake. It’s located adjacent to the Lodi State Park and has around 110 sites to select from, as well as a children’s playground, a mini-golf course, and a gaming arcade.

You can also make the 20-minute drive into Ithaca where there’s a Walmart where you may be able to set up for a night or two with the manager’s permission.

Exploring the City

Book an RV rental in Trumansburg and make the short drive southeast to Ithaca, which lies at the southern tip of Cayuga Lake. It’s home to the Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art, which was designed by renowned architect I.M. Pei and houses more than 35,000 works. Stroll through the scenic Cornell Botanic Gardens that lie adjacent to the Cornell University campus and include an impressive collection of oaks, maples, and crabapples.

Ithaca is also renowned for its waterfalls, including the multi-tiered Cascadilla Falls and the Ithaca Falls that are situated within the city limits. This 150-foot cascade tumbles into an amphitheater-like gorge, with a splash pool and creek at the base that’s a renowned spot for fly fishing. Just to the south of Ithaca is the Buttermilk Falls State Park, which features ten waterfalls that can be accessed along a series of hiking trails.

If you’re traveling with kids, don’t miss a visit to the Sciencenter, an interactive museum that’s packed with hands-on exhibits. There’s an outdoor science playground with a series of interconnected ramps and an 18-hole mini-golf course, as well as a touch tank with live marine animals. Aside from an area dedicated to young kids, there are also experimental exhibits such as the Bernoulli Blower and Ball Machine "Quantum's Last Leap” that will appeal to older kids.

Trumansburg has a supermarket where you can stock up on groceries, as well as a couple of eateries if you want to dine out. There is also a gas station if you need to fill up your travel trailer rental in Trumansburg.

Whether you’re visiting Tompkins County for its waterfalls or proximity to Ithaca, book an RV in Trumansburg and start exploring!
