Situated on the northern bank of the Tuckasegee River, Bryson City serves as the county seat of Swain County, just downstream from the historic Cherokee settlement of Kituhwa. It was founded as Charleston during the mid-19th century before changing its name to Bryson City in honor of an influential resident, Thaddeus Bryson. The Western North Carolina Railroad arrived in 1884, opening Bryson City up to visitors, with the Great Smoky Mountains National Park increasing tourism to the region when it was established in 1933.
