Hatteras Sands Campground

While on your camping trip in the Outer Banks, you'll be close to quite a few natural areas. Jockey’s Ridge State Park is a popular place on the Outer Banks, over near the town of Nags Head to the north. This breathtaking environment has towering sand dunes which were the site of the first flights of the famous Wright brothers, known for being the fathers of modern aviation. Gorgeous hiking trails running through the dunes and an amazing visitor center make this a favorite for outdoor lovers. Just a few miles away when you're camping at Hatteras Sands Campground, Cape Hatteras National Seashore is a brilliant federally-managed park worth seeing. The beauty of this beautiful stretch of coastline is only matched by its treachery, known for being the Graveyard of the Atlantic due to the volatile waters off the coast where many shipwrecks have occurred. Head there for an exciting day on the beach, with tons of hiking, swimming, fishing, and surfing, among other things. Cape Lookout National Seashore is farther south, also managed by the federal government to preserve the integrity and beauty of the Outer Banks. Fifty-six miles of undeveloped beachfront comprise this unbelievable preserve, with historic village districts, old lighthouses, and some amazing wild horses that roam freely. On the mainland, Croatan National Forest covers over 300,000 acres of land, with a vast network of trails for trekking, mountain biking, and more. Rustic camping facilities are ready to accommodate you and your RV rental, but staying overnight is not necessary to make the most of your visit. Guests can also kayak, canoe, fish, hunt, or go birdwatching in the lush forest between the Neuse River and the Atlantic Ocean.
