Lake Wylie is a man-made reservoir on the Catawba River that forms part of the state line between North Carolina and South Carolina.

The reservoir was formed by the completion of the Catawba Dam in 1904 and was operated by the Catawba Power Company. It was originally called Lake Catawba, but in 1960 the power station and the lake were renamed after W. Gil Wylie, one of the founders of the power company that had created Lake Wylie.

Located just a few miles southwest of the city of Charlotte, and only an hour or so north of Columbia, Lake Wylie has become a popular recreational area, where locals and visitors can go fishing, boating, swimming, and more.

Several parks are located along the shoreline, plus the 1,300-acre McDowell Nature Preserve. To easily explore parts of both North and South Carolina surrounding Lake Wylie, book an RV in Mecklenburg County.

Discover Lake Wylie

Getting Outdoors

The easiest access to Lake Wylie is through Ebenezer Park at the south end of the lake. With three public boat ramps and multiple boat docks, getting out on the water is easy. Boat rentals are not available at Ebenezer Park, but there are local companies that can supply boats and fishing gear.

Fishing from the bank is only permitted within 50 feet of the boat ramps, so anglers are encouraged to rent a boat. It’s worth the effort as Lake Wylie has been known to produce trophy-winning fish in the past. The lake is stocked with a variety of species, including a wide variety of bass, sunfish, catfish, and even rainbow trout.

On the eastern side of Lake Wylie is McDowell Nature Preserve that offers various outdoor activities, including 7 miles of hiking trails. A swimming area is located within the preserve, in a roped-off area with lifeguards on duty, so safe for the whole family. Within the park, you can find a wide range of interesting fauna, plus over 100 species of birds, reptiles, amphibians, and mammals. Visit the nature center first for local information on the trails and to check out the discovery center.

Camping at Lake Wylie

State Park RV camping is a great way of getting outdoors, and there are several options for camping around Lake Wylie. At the southern end of the lake, near the town of Rock Hill, SC is Ebenezer Park that also has a large RV camping area. With almost 70 full hook-up campsites, this is a great location right on the edge of the lake. The facilities in the park include boat ramps, a playground, outdoor sports, and picnic areas.

In McDowell Nature Preserve, there are a few dedicated RV camping sites. Note that the maximum size of rental RV permitted is 38 feet, but the majority of sites are tree-shaded so perfect for the summer.

A few miles west of Lake Wylie is the Charlotte / Fort Mill KOA campground. The KOA campground is family fun, and with a swimming pool, mini-golf, a playground area, plus WiFi and cable TV, there is plenty for everyone. All campsites have water and electric hook-up, plus some also have sewer connections for the ultimate convenience. Camping with an RV here could be just right for a great family vacation.

Large sites like KOA’s are not for everyone, and maybe a more secluded campground like the one in Kings Mountain State Park would be just right. The campsites have water and electric hook-ups but are located under the shade of trees. A restroom with hot showers is available plus easy access to the state park facilities.

Exploring the Area

At the very northwest end of Lake Wylie is the Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden, covering over 110-acres of gardens, various indoor areas and all over-looked by the stunning 100-year-old stained-glass visitor pavilion. Opened in 1999 by Daniel Stowe, part of the mission of the gardens is education, with seminars and workshops held on a regular basis.

Between Charlotte and Lake Wylie is Carowinds Theme Park, featuring around 57 separate rides, a water park, kids’ area, and live shows. When you’re looking for something to keep the family amused for a whole day while RV camping near Lake Wylie, this could be just the place.

For all you petrol heads, then the NASCAR Hall of Fame in Charlotte is going to be a must-see destination. Marvel at the huge display of cars, remember the champions in the Hall of Fame and enjoy some of the greatest races in NASCAR history in the theater. When that’s not enough, there’s also the racing simulator and, of course, a gift shop to get all your memorabilia.
