Situated around the unbelievable Devils Lake, Grahams Island State Park offers first-rate fishing to motorhome campers and locals alike. Originally named "Spirit Water" by Native Americans who considered the lake sacred, the translation was lost on European-American settlers as they mistranslated the name into "Devil’s Lake". There’s nothing devilish about this body of water, though, as it's rated among the top five best fishing lakes in the United States.

Located a little over an hour from the farming town of Edmore, and about 45 minutes from the peaceful town of Starkweather, Grahams Island State Park is a North Dakota gem. Spread across the island’s smooth terrain is rich forestry bursting with songbirds, wildlife, and over 100 plants indigenous to the park. Open year-round, the park offers swimming for all ages, as well as nature trails, volleyball, and picnicking at the luxurious Sivert Thompson Activity Center. From birthday parties to family vacations, Grahams Island State Park has got you covered.

Discover Grahams Island State Park

Getting Outdoors

One of the most bizarre yet breathtaking lakes in North Dakota is Devil’s Lake. Legendary for its rapidly changing shores, the lake has reached record depths of 1,400 feet. This unique trait makes for a memorable trip every time you visit, as you never know what you’re going to get. Reputed to be the "Perch Capital of the World", the lake abounds with not only perch, but also northern pike, walleye, white bass, and much more! The island proves to be an angler’s paradise as it offers everything you can think of, from a fish cleaning station to a fully stocked bait shop.

Although fishing may be the top attraction for the lake, Grahams Island State Park campers can enjoy a relaxing swim in the sacred waters. As Graham Island State Park is on a secluded island, swimmers benefit from clean, uninterrupted waters. After a jaunt to the shore, visit the on-site amphitheater located near the children’s playground. Just a hop, skip, and a jump away is the Sivert Thompson Activity Center, a beautiful year-round venue that entertains up to 180 people with amenities such as an indoor bathroom, running water, air-conditioning, a gas grill, and a wood-burning fireplace.

If you’re looking to get some hiking in while camping with an RV, you’ve come to the right place. Twirling through the woods is the North Campground Loop, a one-and-a-half-mile trail immersed inside the ash and oak forest and the Sivert Thompson Loop. The four seasons come alive on this trail with budding light green plants in the spring, sunshine and overflowing leaves in the summer, vibrant and colorful foliage in the fall, and sparkling white blankets in the winter. So grab that camera, don those sneakers, and get going!

Exploring the Area

Only 35 minutes or so away from the park is the rural town of Fort Totten, home to the Fort Totten State Historic Site. Established in 1867, the site was initially built to protect trade and supply routes, but later became a haven of education, healthcare, and boarding for natives. While visiting, you can check out the interpretive center and take a virtual tour through the eyes of a young Chippewa student, or view some historic German letters written by Private Michael Vetter.

If you love viewing wildlife, follow Highway 57 to Sullys Hill National Game Preserve just south of Devil’s Lake to immerse yourself in nature. Originally set aside by President Theodore Roosevelt in 1904 to save the native bison and elk, it still thrives today as a wildlife preserve. While walking the trails, you might catch a glimpse of some white-tailed deer, majestic bison, elk, mink, prairie dogs, or even bald eagles.

While in the area, take a trip over to the nearby golf course, where you can play an 18-hole course to the glistening backdrop of Devil’s Lake. A variety of restaurants are conveniently located in town, so you can indulge in Mexican, American, Chinese, grill, or fast food for a lovely finish to your adventure-filled day. If your RV rental is running low on gas, you can take a short detour at a nearby station to fill up. From golfing to touring to fishing the reserves of the lake, search for an RV in Ramsey County today and experience all the area has to offer.
