LODGING INFORMATION

Hāpuna Beach State Recreation Area rents 4-person A-Frame shelters. These shelters consist of a single screened room with wooden sleeping platforms and a picnic table. Comfort Stations with cold showers and restrooms are available for shared use by all shelters. Food and other personal supplies must be stored in the guest’s unit.

2. ALL CAMPERS MUST BE PRESENT FOR MANDATORY CHECK IN WITH STAFF AT 3:00PM

Hike to the Summit of Mauna Kea or Lake Waiau the 6th highest lake in the U.S.

The largest mountain in Hawaii and one of the largest volcanoes on Earth, Mauna Kea is a geological wonder. Used as a place of cultural reverence, astronomical study, training, and even a NASA Mars mission project, Mauna Kea lies at over 13,000 feet above sea level.

The mountain offers dramatic views of the surrounding landmass and one-of-a-kind stargazing opportunities for those courageous enough to make the climb. But aside from the main attractions this volcano offers, there’s plenty for outdoor adventurers to enjoy along the most significant geological formation on the Big Island.

If you’re planning to gear up and explore the mountain on foot, you’ll want to know a few things about hiking Mauna Kea before you set out on this memorable adventure.

Other things to note

Please no climbing on the roof. Please return the van with a full tank of gas or how its given to you. It’s technically illegal to sleep in a vehicle in public spaces. We have sites available on each side the island where you can park overnight, both dry dock camping sites or beach park campgrounds that you will need to obtain a permit beforehand.

No smoking inside van.

Prohibited areas:
Island Princess does not have 4WD, you are not permitted to take her to anywhere off pavement and places like Makalawena Beach, Green Sands Beach, Waipio Valley, or past the Visitor Center at Mauna Kea. You may hire local services to take you to these locations in a 4x4 vehicle. The van is equipped with a GPS that will alert us if she is in any of these locations, at which point you will be fined $1,000 in addition to the cost of any damage to the vehicle (which there undoubtedly will be, assuming you are even able to get the van back to the road, which you will not). Paved Beach parks and coastlines only.
