Laura Ingalls Wilder is the author of the classic novel Little House on the Prairie, and you can learn about the author and pioneer history at the Ingalls Homestead in De Smet, South Dakota. Visitors to the homestead can try different activities such as driving a covered wagon, twisting hay sticks, making jump ropes, and crafting a doll out of corn cobs. Sit in the one-room schoolhouse and see what it was like for children living in the Dakota Territory in the 1880s, or see how you’d get on washing clothes manually on a washboard. Most things at the Ingalls Homestead are hands-on and interactive experiences, making it a great time for people of all ages.
