Getting Outdoors

Donkey Lake is located just outside of the Capitol Reef National Park. The park offers many attractions, and the lake does as well. Fishing is the most prominent activity on the lake. Brook trout and several other species of trout can be caught at Donkey Lake. Anglers might search for RV rentals in Wayne County solely for the impressive trout opportunities.

Camping at Donkey Lake

Donkey Lake Campers can camp at several National Park Service (NPS) campsites. Fruita Campground in Capitol Reef National Park is an NPS campground. The sites are rustic campsites with no hookups. Water is available at a communal bathroom. Several sites are large enough for a big rig, and hiking trails run right next to the campgrounds.

Exploring the Area

Many of the attractions around Donkey Lake concern the history of the Native Americans living in Utah and the Mormon settlers who arrived later. Escalante Heritage Center in Escalante, UT, is an example of this history. The center highlights the dangerous journey of several Mormon explorers in 1879 who traveled through a narrow passage to the Colorado River. At one point, the trail travels through a very narrow pass through Glen Canyon; this became known as the “hole in the rock.”
