Navajo Lake is a small, picturesque reservoir that lies within the lush, green Dixie National Forest in southwest Utah. Located atop Cedar Mountain, the natural lake was formed many years ago when a lava flow dammed in the eastern end of the valley. A large man-made dike stretches across the eastern end to help maintain a constant water level. Navajo Lake was originally known to the native Piute Indians as “Pa-Cu-Ay," which means "Cloud Lake."

A search for an RV in Kane County can be the beginning of an exciting motorhome camping day trip or weekend getaway at Navajo Lake, which is often not as busy as some of the other local lakes. The lake is a popular place for diverse outdoor activities and is centrally located between other magnificent settings like Bryce Canyon, Zion National Park, and Cedar Breaks National Monument.

Discover Navajo Lake

Getting Outdoors

Navajo Lake’s shallow depths only reach around 25 feet. However, this is still a fantastic reservoir to enjoy water recreation. If you’re a fan of fishing, definitely bring a rod and reel in your new RV rental. Thanks to an abundance of brook, rainbow, and splake trout and a large population of Utah chub, Navajo Lake is a tranquil place to cast a line and see what catches your bait in the deeper waters.

When you’re camping at Navajo Lake and want to explore in a watercraft, you’ll find this reservoir provides idyllic conditions for boating or cruising around with a canoe, kayak, or standup paddleboard. Or you might choose to take a refreshing swim, float around in a tube in the lake’s blue-green waters, or watch a colorful sunrise or sunset as you lounge on the lakeshore.

In addition to water sports, the beautiful nature surrounding Navajo Lake provides a vibrant setting for all kinds of activities on dry land. There are plenty of opportunities to enjoy backpacking, biking, hiking, and wildlife photography around this spectacular region. A popular route for cyclists is the Navajo Lake Loop trail, which is an 11-mile loop accessible from the local campground on the Navajo Lake trail.

Camping at Navajo Lake

When it’s time to settle in for the night and camp in an RV near Navajo Lake, you’ll have the convenient option of staying right on the shores of the reservoir at the Navajo Lake Campground. There are single and double campsites as well as walk-in tent sites here that all feature picnic tables and fire rings. Amenities include drinking water, flush and vault toilets, and a dump station.

The peak season at this campground is generally May through September. It is not a large campground, but it is popular for its cozy environment and close proximity to the water. Don’t forget your canine companions; doggies are allowed at this campground as long as they’re kept on a leash.

Navajo Lake campers will be able to access the 32-mile Virgin River Rim Trail a short distance from the campground. Whether you prefer to travel on foot, horseback or mountain bike, make sure to bring a camera to capture the panoramic and breathtaking views of Zion National Park, the Kolob Plateau, and the Pine Valley Mountains.

Exploring the Area

On the south shore of the lake, there are commercial boat rentals and launching areas as well as accommodations like the rustic cabins of Navajo Lake Lodge, which dates back to 1927 and features a well-stocked general store. This is a good area to stock up on last-minute groceries and gasoline before continuing your road trip in a Kane County camper rental.

Not far from Navajo Lake is Duck Creek Pond and the Duck Creek Visitor Center, which was a Ranger Station in the 1930s through the 1960s and still provides helpful information about the area. Drive about 10 miles away from the lake to explore the trails on your own or take a guided tour around the stunning scenery of the Cedar Breaks National Monument. You might also want to visit the Ashdown Gorge Wilderness Area, which is just outside Cedar Breaks and features ancient bristlecone pine trees in the Twisted Forest.

Around 40 minutes away from Navajo Lake is Cedar City, UT, where you’ll be able to experience a great dose of arts and culture. Theater enthusiasts will definitely want to catch a show at the Utah Shakespeare Festival, one of the oldest and largest Shakespeare festivals in North America. Before you hop back in your campervan, discover Cedar City’s many local eateries and do some shopping. All kinds of live entertainment await you in Las Vegas, NV, which is only about three hours’ drive from Navajo Lake.
