Getting Outdoors

Explore the untamed wilderness of Townshend State Forest and Bald Mountain by hitting the hiking trail that leads to the summit. This is an ideal opportunity to give your muscles a good workout, observe the surrounding area, do a little wildlife watching, and also see some of the most beautiful waterfalls and creeks. Bring your binoculars for a closer look at the area's bird species on your way to the top of the mountain. A few of these include avian predators like golden eagles, bald eagles, and kestrels.

West River is another natural attraction of the state park. Campers come here to fish, swim, and paddle in a kayak or canoe. All you need is a valid fishing license and your gear, and you're all set to spend a day trying to catch trout and bass. As far as swimming goes, you don't have to limit yourself to West River, since Townshend Dam recreation area is also available for the guests. Swimming opportunities are far better there.

Lastly, what kind of state park camping trip would it be if you don’t enjoy a nice picnic? Townshend State Park has a lovely area for picnicking near its ranger center, where you get to enjoy scenic views while eating.
