Newport News Park Campground is in Newport News, VA, which is on the far eastern side of the state. The campground sits on the Virginia Peninsula, which is surrounded on three sides by water. You will find the James River to the west, and the larger, Chesapeake Bay, which then leads to the Atlantic Ocean, less than 20 miles to the east. This is one of the larger towns in the area, with the large city of Richmond being only about 60 miles to the northwest, while the Washington D.C. metro area is less than 200 miles to the north.There are almost 200 campsites located at the park, and the campground is open throughout the year. There is a large field for flying remote control airplanes, and an 18-hole, championship-style, disc golf course. Fishing and hiking are both activities that can be enjoyed on-site, and the campground offers a bike loop. Equipment rentals, such as boats and bikes, are available from the camp store. A home that was here during the Civil War, and was used as a hospital during that time, has been restored and is available for touring, as are the rest of the plantation grounds.
