RV Renaissance Fair Adventures

Hale traveler, what strange manner of conveyance is this?  I have never seen a cart so grand in its design or lush in its accommodations. Clearly, you must be a high noble of some distant land! If you have ever attended a Renaissance fair, this kind of talk should be familiar to you. If you haven’t attended one in an RV, you could be missing out.

If you rent yourself a fine RV from Outdoorsy, you can hit up your favorite renaissance fair in grand style. There may actually be no better way to attend a fair than to do it in an RV.

Pray tell, why is it so great?

There are many wonderful things about renaissance fairs. They are full of creativity, the desire to entertain one another and they offer an escape from everyday modernity. They are also a continuous party dedicated to having fun. These are some of the many qualities that attract millions of people each year to attend a fair. Attending in an RV is perhaps the ultimate way to fully enjoy the ren fair experience.

You can take a rest

The things that make fairs fun: crowds, noise, laughter, costumes, and craziness, can get a bit overwhelming. Sometimes you just need to take a break, but there is a lot more you want to experience. If you have an RV nearby, you can hop on over, get away from the action, and get some downtime. Then, once rested and refreshed, you can jump right back into the fair. Even if you are just a bit bored or want to wait for the next cool show in shade and comfort, you can ditch the fairgrounds and wait it out in the RV.

A private bathroom

You could use a porta-potty visited by 1,000 of your fellow fairgoers, or one dedicated just to you and your besties. For this reason alone you will be the envy of the masses!

Costume closet

If you are a hardcore costume junkie, nothing is more fun than being able to show off more than one costume during the fair. You could have a good morning outfit, something to beat the heat of the day, and something warm for the evening. Just hop on over to your home away from home and you are a new you.

Clean up

With turkey legs, mud shows, fair dust, pickles, candied apples and good old-fashioned sweat, it’s easy to get pretty dirty at a ren fair.  Having a sanctuary where you can go clean up yourself and your costume is a godsend.

Renaissance fair RV parking

Each fair is a little different when it comes to RV parking. Your best bet is to check the website for the fair you want to attend and see what they offer. Some fairs manage their own parking accommodations, others have third parties that manage the parking. Some of them allow overnight camping for visitors, others do not.

Fair camping

A lot of fairs take place in rural settings and they are the ones most likely to have camping available at or near the fairgrounds. Because many fair performers travel the country from one fair to another, they often camp out at the fairs they attend. For this reason, camping is a common practice at many fairs.

Fair camping tends to fall into two categories: traditional campgrounds near the fair or boondocking on the fairgrounds. Traditional camping often means hookups for power, water, and sewer which are great to have if you are staying more than a night or two. The boondocking campgrounds often have the advantage of being right next to the fairgrounds so you can jump back and forth any time. Boondocking usually means no amenities and the terrain can often be uneven, possibly un-navigable in a big RV.

Ren-Fair campgrounds often have something of a party atmosphere. Performers and attendees will gather to drink and unwind after a long day at the fair. There is usually a designated quiet time, so folks can get some sleep, but it can be pretty noisy up till then. Larger camps will often designate some areas for reveling, and others for folks that want to keep things sedate.

For fairs that don’t offer on-site RV parking, you can generally find an RV park not too far away that will suit your needs. If you are attending for a single day, an off-site RV park might not be a big advantage, but if you are attending more than one night, it’s a big boon to only travel a short distance to and from the fairgrounds. If the RV park is often used for the fair, they may have a shuttle that goes back and forth.

Finding a Fair

I recommend The Renlist as pretty much the best website for finding a fair to attend. You can search in your area of the country, by date, or in just about any way you like. You will also likely find nearly every active Renaissance fair has a Facebook page and a website you can find with a Google Search. Renaissance fairs are pretty much everywhere in the United States. The lions share of Renaissance fairs take place in the summer months to take advantage of the best weather. Spring and fall fairs are not uncommon in the southern parts of the country. There are even some, like the Texas Renaissance Festival that takes place in the winter months. The Texas fair is one of the most famous for its camping scene.
