Medicine Lake Provincial Recreation Area is situated 64 km (40 miles) to the north of Alberta's Rocky Mountain House. Transportation

Driving

The journey from Rocky Mountain House, AB to Medicine Lake Provincial Recreation Area encompasses 64 km (40 miles). To begin the route, follow AB-11 W/AB-22 until you reach the juncture for Township Road 443A in the town of Alder Flats. Follow along this road until you enter the town of Buck Lake and spot your destination. The roads along this route are comprised of two lanes and are kept in good condition. Traffic moves along very well. Occasionally,. road construction takes place, typically during the summer months.


A shorter journey, the path from Alder Flats, AB to the park is only 31 km (19 miles). Start the route by taking AB-22 to Township Rd 443A in Clearwater County. Follow along this road until you enter the town of Buck Lake. The park can be found just up the road. A route that follow along mostly country roads, the highways consist of two lanes. Each of the paths along this trek is in good condition. Traffic remains fluid except when road construction occurs, causing delays.

Parking

Parking is available via a lot at the entrance to Medicine Lake Provincial Recreation Area.

A park that is found in an extremely remote setting, there is no public transportation to this recreational area and campground.

Reservations camping

Medicine Lake Campground

Medicine Lake Campground is open from May 1st through October 14th for RV and tent camping by reservation only. There are 49 campsites available; all of them unserviced. Generator use is permitted, and dogs are welcome on the premises but must remain leashed.

A campground that prides itself on its rustic living style, there are fewer amenities found here than other area camping facilities. Among the features you will discover are horseshoe pits, a boat launch, a playground, firewood, firepits, a fish cleaning station, a community cooking shelter, picnic tables, and dry toilets.

The most popular activities at this park and campground are canoeing, fishing, picnicking, wildlife viewing, photography, float tubing, and kayaking.

In-Season

Canoeing

Medicine Lake is the perfect place to enjoy a relaxing afternoon on the water. Launch your canoe into the water from the boat launch or directly from the shore and paddle out into the depths of the lake to enjoy a day of fun in the sun.

Power boating is also permitted on this lake, but a maximum speed of 12 km per hour is mandated by law.

Bring along some drinking water and a packed lunch to enjoy while out in your canoe or power boat. Don't forget to pack some sunscreen as well to avoid getting a sunburn.

Float tubing

Float tubing is a popular activity at Medicine Lake Provincial Recreation Area. If you're looking for a relaxing way to spend the day, grab your float tube and paddle out into the middle of the river and float your cares away.

The water is typically calm and clear but do take care to avoid tubing when the weather is poor or the current is too strong.

Be sure to wear lots of sunscreen to avoid getting a sunburn.

Picnicking

Medicine Lake Provincial Recreation Area is a great place to enjoy a picnic lunch. You can cop a squat on the banks by the lake or take a seat at one of the tables provided in the picnic areas.

Though there are no specific trails at Medicine Lake Provincial Recreation Area, there are lots of scenic spots to explore on the grounds. Fishing

The fishing is excellent at Medicine Lake Provincial Recreation Area.The lake waters are full of such species of fish as northern pike, yellow perch, and white sucker. A fishing license is required to fish in Alberta waters.

There is a fish cleaning station located not far from the shore, allowing you the perfect opportunity to fillet your seafood bounty in preparation for a great meal. Make use of the community cooking shelter to grill up a feast for all to enjoy.
