Event information

Movement is an annual electronic music festival that is held in Detroit, the birthplace of the popular sub-genre, Techno. The event has been going strong every year since 2006 with some history before that time. The first event was organized by well-known DJ Derrick May and was a public success. Although several electronic music events are held in Detroit every year, Movement stands out because of its incredible line-up and unique vibe.

The event aims to showcase electronic music culture and features performances by world-class DJs and musicians. Artists like Fatboy Slim, Felix da Housecat, Skrillex, and Beardyman have all performed at Movement. It celebrated its tenth anniversary in 2016, making it one of the longest running dance music festivals in the world.

Transportation

Driving

It may be tricky driving your RV within city limits during high traffic times. So it’s a good idea to park your vehicle in one of the campgrounds on the outskirts of Detroit and head to the event from there if you can. When you’re on the road, it’s important to be aware of local speed limits and the flow of traffic. You can use your radio or a smartphone to find the routes with the least amount of traffic between your chosen campsite and the venue site.

Parking areas

Street parking is limited, and finding a free spot can be extremely difficult. The streets around the festival tend to get pretty jammed with traffic. There are paid parking lots nearby, but you’ll need to reserve your spot a month or two in advance. Another option is to park in the grounds of one of the casinos nearby, which may have a fee.

Public Transportation

You can save yourself from a ton of stress by taking public transport to and from the venue. The Detroit Department of Transportation operates buses that run to many parts of the city. Another option is the elevated rail system. There are also plenty of shuttle and taxi services to choose from in the city's vicinity.

Where to stay

Onsite

Onsite camping is not allowed, and you’ll need to leave the festival grounds at an allotted time every day. You'll find plenty of options nearby along the edges of Detroit.

Nearby

Choosing a campground in near Detroit is an excellent way to add some fun to your musical adventure to Movement! Finding a campground or RV park within the City of Detroit may be a bit of a challenge. But there are quite a few well-equipped campsites within driving distance of the city. Many of these feature amenities like swimming pools, playgrounds, and clubhouses. They are well-maintained and come fully equipped with all the facilities you’ll need.

Getting around

Some RV parks offer shuttles that can take you to and from the city center. Check if you’ll be able to use this service to get to your destination of choice. You can also ask around and find out if any of your fellow campers plan to attend the festival and carpool with them or rideshare.

What to pack

Clothing

You won’t find a lot of people dressed in costume or decked out in rave attire at Movement. It has a casual vibe, so jeans and t-shirts are part of the typical clothing choices. It can get pretty cold at night, and there is a chance of rain, so you should carry a jacket to throw on in the evening.

Gear

Small and medium-sized backpacks can be taken inside the venue. Hydration packs and water bottles are allowed as long as they are empty or sealed. Non-aerosol sunscreen, hat, sunglasses, and binoculars are some other useful things to carry. In case you’d like to stash away your gear, there are lockers available for rent.

Health & Safety

Always stay hydrated and avoid spending too much time in the sun. Remember that moderation is key to enjoying yourself throughout the days of the festival. Keep your phone charged at all times to contact your group if you get separated. There are cell phone charging stations in some areas that you can use if needed.

Where to eat

Cooking

Outside food and beverages cannot be taken into the festival grounds, and coolers are prohibited. RV parks in the area allow cooking, so you will be able to whip up meals using a portable stove. If you stay in a campsite that’s close to the water, you can even catch fresh fish for your meals.

Restaurants

You will find some truly delicious food to be had in the City of Detroit. You’ll find numerous excellent restaurants close to the festival venue. Detroit is a food lover’s delight, and whatever you’re in the mood for, you’ll find it there. There are also some incredible food halls where you can try many different cuisines under one roof.

Vendors

You can expect to see a number of local Detroit food trucks onsite. You can choose from the usual festival fare or go for healthier options. You’ll also find many vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free choices. In addition to the food, there will be vendors present selling clothing, audio gear, and official festival merchandise.

Safety

Security

Security is taken very seriously, and your belongings will be thoroughly searched before entry. Anyone holding a weekend pass will be allowed to leave and re-enter the venue at will. One-day pass holders can enter and exit the area only on that day. Your wristband must be scanned every time you enter or exit the festival grounds.

Weather

Movement Music Festival is held during the summer months. However, the climate in the Midwest can be fickle at times. It can be sunny one minute and cloudy the next. The event will go on no matter how the weather on the day decides to unfold. So, be prepared for rain and wear appropriate clothing to protect yourself from the evening chill.

Medical

A medical facility will be located at an easily accessible part of the venue. If you or someone else requires medical assistance, you can speak to the nearest security guard. Most areas are wheelchair accessible, and special requests can be made by sending an email to the organizers in advance. EMS personnel will also be making the rounds to assist those in need.
