Six Flags Discovery Kingdom

With 40 rides, a kid’s park, and animal attractions, Six Flags Discovery Kingdom in Vallejo, California is a fun place for everyone on your next RV trip.

Event information

Six Flags Discovery Kingdom in Vallejo, California started out as a small zoo named Marine World in 1968. Then in 1996, the park added amusement rides and was changed into a theme park, making it only one of two Six Flags Theme Parks with animal attractions. Some of these attractions include swimming with the dolphins, interacting with giraffes, feeding the seals, and a tour of land animals. Guests can also see alligators at Alligator Isle, visit cougars, and play with the penguins.

If you’re looking for more thrills, Discovery Kingdom has 15 thrill rides, including the longest and tallest roller coaster in Northern California, Medusa. This featured ride is 3,937 feet long, with 150-foot drops, and goes 65 miles per hour, and it is the world’s only sea serpent roll. Some others include Superman, the Joker, and the Flash. The kids can enjoy Air Penguins, the Acme Fun Factory, and Yosemite Sam’s Flight School. There are also water rides where you can get wet and cool off.

When hunger hits, pick from one of the 34 food kiosks and eateries in Discovery Kingdom, including Gotham City Snacks, funnel cakes, and meal choices that include fish, pizza, and even Asian cuisine. The burgers aren’t bad either. Wash it all down with a soft drink or adult beverage and then have a seat at one of the many shows around the park.

Tickets

Much like other amusement parks, if you get your Six Flags Discovery Kingdom tickets online, you may get them for about 50% off. In past years, tickets were only about $30 online versus $75 at the gate. And for around $80, you can get a season pass, which means you can get in for free all year long at any of the 21 Six Flags Theme Parks in the US. This pass pays for itself if you go more than one time!

Transportation

Driving

Discovery Kingdom is only 10 miles from Napa, 25 miles from Oakland, and 30 miles from San Francisco off of CA-37. Travelers might get to the park from I-80, I-780, or CA-29. Take a side trip to San Francisco to see the well-known Golden Gate National Recreation Area or the Oakland Zoo inside the Joseph Knowland State Arboretum and Park. Stop by Napa for a glass of wine in wine country, or take a trip to see the Pacific Ocean during your RV trip to Northern California.

Parking areas

Pay for your parking online and save yourself some time and money at the entry tolls when you get to the park. You also won’t have to worry about not being able to find a spot. RVers will be directed to the correct area for day parking upon entry, or you can plan to park at a San Francisco RV campground and take public transportation to the Six Flags Discovery Kingdom.

Public Transportation

Whether you are coming from Downtown San Francisco or nearby Vallejo, you can find public transportation to bring you to the park. The SolTrans bus can get you there from just about anywhere in the Bay Area. BART is also a great option, which can get you to and from the bus from smaller areas, too. Amtrak can get you there on the Thruway Shuttle from Martinez Station as well.

Where to stay

Onsite

There is no campground at Six Flags Discovery Kingdom for RVs, tents, or otherwise. Parking overnight in the parking lot is also not an option. However, some apps can help you find an overnight parking lot or boondocking spot to stay overnight.

Nearby

Several San Francisco campgrounds surrounding area accept RVs. If your motorhome is too big for other campgrounds, head to San Francisco North / Petaluma KOA where they can accommodate rigs up to 100 feet long. With over 300 sites, most with utilities, you will be sure to find a spot you like. They even have a rock wall, petting farm, pool, spa, K9 Kamp, camp store, and so much more. Guests here may have almost as much fun here as at Discovery Kingdom!

The Benicia State Recreation Area just six miles to the south has several campsites where you can stay overnight in a beautiful outdoor setting. Be prepared with full water and fuel tanks and empty grey and black water tanks; no utilities or amenities.

Getting around

Six Flags Discovery Kingdom provides a free shuttle service to get visitors from the parking lot to the front gate of the park. However, they only run about once every 15 minutes, so if you are close to the gate, you may want to walk. For those with mobility issues, you can bring your own wheelchair or rent one from the Guest Relations offices.

What to pack

Clothing

Comfortable shoes for walking, shorts, and t-shirts are typical clothing you will see at Discovery Kingdom. The weather is just about perfect all year long here, but it can get a bit chilly in the evenings even during the summer. So, bring long pants and a hoodie or jacket as well even if you visit in July. Rain is unlikely from May through September, but it does not hurt to pack rain gear anyway.

Gear

Remember that you have to carry whatever you bring unless you have a backpack, which is not allowed on many rides. So, you may want to pack lightly or rent a locker. Bring your wallet, keys, phone, and ticket to get in, which should all fit in your pockets or a fanny pack. Packing these items in a clear Ziploc bag makes them easy to keep together and will keep them dry on water rides.

Health & Safety

One of the items you may want to bring is sunblock or sunscreen. Travel-sized bottles are perfect because they fit in your pocket or fanny pack. Sunglasses, a hat, and a pocket-sized first-aid kit may also come in handy. At the camp, you will need to have something to repel the mosquitoes and other little critters as well as flashlights and a warming blanket for those who get cold at night.

Where to eat

Cooking

Sometimes RVers would rather cook outdoors than be inside when on vacation. So, just in case, bring your own camp stove or barbecue grill. That way, if the site does not have a grill, cooking outdoors is still an option. Be sure to keep the basics in the rig at all times like aluminum foil, trash bags, paper plates, plastic cutlery, and cooking spray.

Restaurants

Head over to Hyde Park, just two miles to the east, for a group meal at a popular seafood restaurant, diner, burger bar, or Italian eatery. Nearby Vallejo has just about everything else you can think of, including soul food, seafood, a fancy Italian restaurant, a couple of Mexican establishments, and several Asian places. Sushi, French food, and a few cafés are also nearby.

Vendors

If you want to sit down and have a meal while at the park, you can choose from several restaurants that serve everything from seafood to pizza or burgers to fried rice. Looking for a snack? Hit one of the snack shacks located throughout the park where you can get pretzels, popcorn, and nachos. To satisfy a sweet tooth, you’ll find over a dozen ice creameries, funnel cake shops, and snow cone kiosks as well as candy stores galore. You’ll also find 20 different gift shops with unique items like caricatures, airbrush art, and other souvenirs.

Safety

Security

Don’t forget to review the Six Flags Discovery Kingdom website to find out what items are not allowed at the park. Some of the most common are sharp items, selfie sticks, weapons, and glass. All guests have to pass through a metal detector before entering the park, so make sure you remove your keys, phone, and other pocket items before you get to the front of the line.

Weather

Northern California usually has excellent weather all year long, with highs rarely going above 85. Springtime temps are generally in the upper 60s or lower 70s. However, nights can be downright cold with an average temp of about 50, even in July and August. You may not have to worry too much about rain during the peak season, but you may want to keep a poncho around just in case.

Medical

If you are feeling ill or have an injury, be sure to head for the first-aid station by the Boomerang roller coaster. Six Flags Discovery Kingdom has medical professionals on staff, including paramedics who can help with just about any issue. If they cannot handle it, they will transport you to the nearest medical facility, which is less than two miles away.
