The 684-acre reservoir is the star attraction at East Canyon State Park. On the east side of the lake, you can rent water sports equipment from the park's rental service, from high-powered ski boats, jet skis, and wave runners to family-friendly pontoons and fishing boats. Things don't slow down in the winter, when East Canyon State Park transforms into a snow-dusted outdoor playground. Hit the scenic cross-country ski trails or try your luck at ice fishing. Pick up a special permit and you can even ride a snowmobile on the reservoir. Stretching from Illinois to Utah, the Mormon Pioneer Trail driving route offers a glimpse of the region's rich pioneer history. In 1846, a group of farmers known as the Donner Party traveled west in search of fertile land, passing through East Canyon along the way. The next year, more pioneers followed in their footsteps and eventually reached the Salt Lake valley. Today, you can cruise along the Utah Highway 65, which follows the historic route. If you feel like stretching your legs, the four-mile hiking trail from Mormon Flat to the summit of Big Mountain rewards you with sweeping views over the region. East Canyon State Park is a haven for local wildlife, with the chance to spot elk, deer, and moose grazing on the mountain slopes. You can also keep an eye out for smaller animals like coyotes, bobcats, and beavers. Cast a line and you could reel in trout, crappie, crawfish, and smallmouth bass – perfect for a fish fry back at your campsite.
