Lake Somerville State Park is divided into four unique units, and each unit has a network of trails totaling nearly 40 miles in all. The Trailway is over 13 miles long and connects two of the more popular park units, Birch Creek and Nails Creek. Hikers and bikers are allowed on all trails throughout the park. Many of the trails are also open for horseback riding. When packing your rental motorhome, don't forget your fishing gear. Anglers of all skill levels enjoy casting their lines while camping at Lake Somerville State Park. Largemouth bass, crappie, white bass, and catfish are abundant in Lake Somerville. A fishing license isn't required if you are fishing from the shore or a jetty within a Texas state park. A fishing jetty is located in the Birch Creek Unit. A valid Texas fishing license is required if you're fishing from a boat. If you're new to fishing, you can borrow gear from the park office. Boating is a big draw for day visitors and campers to Lake Somerville State Park. The lake offers over 11,000 acres to explore and spend a relaxing day on the water. Both motorized and non-motorized boats are allowed on the lake. Kayaks, canoes, and stand-up paddleboards are also a common sight. There are two boat launch ramps in the park: one at Birch Creek and the other at Nails Creek. Swimming is permitted at the lake; however, there's no lifeguard on duty.
