The Great Salt Lake is located in northern Utah. The lake is one of the largest saltwater lakes in the Western Hemisphere. The Great Salt Lake is also one of the largest terminal lakes in the world; these are lakes that have inlets but no natural outlets. Instead, the water in a terminal lake fluctuates due to evaporation. The size of the Great Salt Lake fluctuates greatly because it’s a fairly shallow lake. Typically, it is about 1,700 square miles in area, but it has been as small as 950 square miles and as large as 3,300 square miles. At certain times, it’s one of the largest US lakes outside of the Great Lakes.
The Great Salt Lake has been known to Native American tribes living in the West for hundreds of years. Even before that, the lake was part of a much larger lake that geologists call Lake Bonneville. That lake was about 22,000 square miles at times. Different geological and climatological changes reduced the lake’s size about 17,000 years ago. The Native Americans familiar with the lake prized its fishing, waterfowls, and other game.

Ogden, UT, and Salt Lake City are the closest cities and are less than thirty minutes from the lakeshore. Provo is less than an hour away, and the Nevada border is about 90 minutes away.
