The Golden Spike National Historic Site is located near Promontory, Utah, in the far north-central portion of the state. The nearest larger town is Perry, found around 30 miles to the east, with the nearest large city is the state's capital, Salt Lake City, at almost 90 miles to the southeast. The park is also less than 50 miles from the state border that Utah shares with Idaho to the north.

This portion of Utah consists mostly of open prairie land, dotted with scrub brush. It is bordered by rugged mountain peaks, and the large, Great Salt Lake, just to the south. This scenic area is a prime place to enjoy outdoor recreational opportunities, such as hiking and camping in the summer and snow sports during the cold season.

Getting Outdoors

There is a Migratory Bird Refuge on the shores of this body of water. Here large flocks of migrating birds can be seen at various times during the year. There are plenty of fun things to do in the park. During the summer months, train locomotive demonstrations are available. There are also reenactments of the final spike being driven into the railroad bed, connecting the east and west sections of this railroad line that spanned the country. There is also a walking trail at the park. It allows you to walk on the original grade of the railroads that ran in this area. This includes sites such as Big Fill. You can also traverse cuts through the rocks and places where dirt had to be filled in. You may spot some drill marks where dynamite was needed to remove the rock, as well.

The Golden Spike RV Park is in Brigham City, around 30 miles to the east of the park. This camp is open year-round and can accommodate all sizes of rigs and almost any length of stay. It offers cable, WiFi, campsites with hookups, bathrooms, showers, and a laundry room for guests. It is also located just off of I-15 so finding it should be no trouble.

Aspen Grove RV Park is in Tremonton. This camp is also open all year, it offers hookups and it is pet-friendly. It also provides game courts, WiFi, a laundry facility, showers and bathrooms for those who stay here. A dog run is provided for your four-legged friend, as well. Exploring the Area

The Utah State Railroad Museum highlights the impacts that industry has had on the local area. You can even tour some of the train cars. The Hill Aerospace features military aircraft the country has used. At the John M. Browning Firearms Museum, you can learn about the various equipment that the company has produced over the years.
