The Great Salt Lake is located in northern Utah. The lake is one of the largest saltwater lakes in the Western Hemisphere. The Great Salt Lake is also one of the largest terminal lakes in the world; these are lakes that have inlets but no natural outlets. Instead, the water in a terminal lake fluctuates due to evaporation. The size of the Great Salt Lake fluctuates greatly because it’s a fairly shallow lake. Typically, it is about 1,700 square miles in area, but it has been as small as 950 square miles and as large as 3,300 square miles. At certain times, it’s one of the largest US lakes outside of the Great Lakes.

The Great Salt Lake has been known to Native American tribes living in the West for hundreds of years. Even before that, the lake was part of a much larger lake that geologists call Lake Bonneville. That lake was about 22,000 square miles at times. Different geological and climatological changes reduced the lake’s size about 17,000 years ago. The Native Americans familiar with the lake prized its fishing, waterfowls, and other game.

Travelers camping with an RV at Great Salt Lake can experience many outdoor adventures in the area. They can also easily travel to nearby areas. Ogden, UT, and Salt Lake City are the closest cities and are less than thirty minutes from the lakeshore. Provo is less than an hour away, and the Nevada border is about 90 minutes away.

Getting Outdoors

The Great Salt Lake is one of Utah’s most popular attractions for Utah campers. Antelope Island is one of ten islands in the lake. The island has no permanent residents and mostly serves as a nature preserve where visitors can view interesting wildlife. Outdoors lovers often enjoy cycling and hiking on the island. The island also features public beaches, camping areas, and a marina. Nature lovers can spot coyotes, bison, and the antelope, which give the island its name. Horseback riding is also popular. Lastly, the island is a popular trail running destination. The island hosts several different running races throughout the year, ranging from 15-mile races to a 100-mile race.

Great Salt Lake State Park is the other park operated by the state of Utah. The park is known for its marina, where boating enthusiasts can launch their boats. Anglers often fish from docks, from the shore, or from their boats. The Great Salt Lake is also known for the difficulty of its sailing. The windy weather and fluctuating conditions make it particularly challenging for sailors. Book an RV in Weber County today and test your boating skills.

Cryptozoology enthusiasts also come to the Great Salt Lake to try to spot some of the mythical creatures that are said to inhabit the lake. Namely, residents have claimed that whales live in the lake, though none have been spotted since 1875. Also, employees of a salt company in the late 1800s claimed to have been attacked by a monster. The monster has been known as the North Shore Monster.

Camping at Great Salt Lake

Many Great Salt Lake campers choose to stay at Great Salt Lake State Park. The park offers 30-amp electric, 50-amp electric, and water. The park also offers showers and restrooms. The park is near the water, so campers can swim or fish near their campsite.

Oquirrh Mountain Inn has full hookups with 50-amp electric. The park offers pull-through sites and big rig access, as well. Due to the fluctuating shoreline of the lake, the park is not right on the water, but it is very close.

Salt Lake City KOA has full hookups along with wifi and cable television. Big rigs can access certain parking spots. Other spots are pull-through spots for travelers who’d rather not back in their RV rentals in Great Salt Lake. They have a pool as well.

Exploring the Area
